Since u are asking specifically abt whether a nett 5 should choose NYJC hybrid or arts stream (instead of pure science stream) for strategic reasons,

Do note the slide posted on page 156 of this thread. It shows those subjects that hit record results (i assume record high, not record low haha). These are all science subjects (except for Translation, which is not a traditional humans/Arts subject actually; and i presume u will need to be a native speaker to score an A in it, or to beat the bell curve). Is this a sign that NYJC Arts teachers are not that good? I don’t know because i have no insider news.

In the real-life case u mentioned (triple arts + math), that student must be dead sure not going to choose a STEM field in uni, since that combi will essentially close such doors on him.
Yes, I noticed the other two sciences physics and biology are not reported as record performance. Refer to As?? Or significant improvement?
Only one sci, chem is in the list. Further math and computing are small cohort and likely taken by same group of students.

With Chem, Math and Econs plus Geo/Hist, one can still take med and sci related courses. This combi is allowed at nyjc arts if i gathered correctly. Noted that this combi is under Sci stream at other JCs.

The kid was adamant and knew exactly what he wants. Of course he knows he is not going to take med. Only those who are not choosing sci related courses can consider choosing pure humanities.

….These are all science subjects (except for Translation, which is not a traditional humans/Arts subject actually……..
to me personally, Translation is more “humanity” than Geography/Econ. Humanity studies is about human interactions. Geo is human interaction with the physical world; history pass human interaction as society; Lit, interaction on emotion level. To know translation well, I presume must be able to grasps the essence of what the first language speaker trying to say, chose the right words, in order to translate the intent accurately into another language. We all know if we only translate word for word, it may sounds like jokes. Translation training is to bridge human interaction well between different region speakers.

I like the Movie “Arrival”. Long story short, it’s about linguisticians around the world are brought in attempt to communicate with different groups of aliens arrive on earth, by first teaching the alien our human language. In a nutshell , what words are use determine the mood of the communication . And war nearly started because aggressive words are taught to one group of aliens by human from one country and as a result that country and that group of aliens can only sound “aggressive” to each other.

I agree Translation is not “Traditional” in the sense not many people take it. But I see it as close cousin (and easier to score than?) of Literature, very “humanity”

Maybe , Translation students are better listeners too, an important asset in both private and professional life, an important soft skill?

Let’s say we transplant the same curriculum into a lower tier JC, I do not think the the said JC will float to 3rd place (after RI and HCI). So we can’t say that the caliber of NYJC’s intake does not make a difference.

What I have heard is that NYJC teachers are good and caring. I think that makes a lot of difference.

Another reason NYJC has produced good results could be due to the previous policy (dare I say, loophole) that Arts students can do PCME/BCME. As we all know that for Arts (Humanities) subjects, marking can be very subjective. You thought you did well but the markers may think otherwise so your expected A in Econs (or GP or Literature) may become a C.

We shall see how NYJC will perform moving forward. I do not think NYJC can go back to reviving the policy as it is now on MOE’s radar and visible to the whole SG.

Someone shared in KSP before, another reason could be NYJC’s strategy is to get students to focus on 3H2 and 1H1 whereas RI/HCI/EJC/VJC etc. will push for 4H2. I would say the 3H2 focus is a good strategy for NYJC.

So I am curious to know, 3-5yrs down the road, how will the new A level marking system (RP70) affect NYJC standing when all JCs focus on doing well for 3H2s.
Yes, what u said is possible, may come true, lee_yl

From year 2026 onwards,
once MOE release A level results around the date :
23 February 2026,
Yes,

(NYJC + All other JCs') standing may all change,

because from now,
we only want to focus / concentrate on your 3 best H2 subjects.

Frankly, in Singapore, many thousands of JC (2) students have done very well, in their 3 best H2 subjects. Inside MOE computer database, already captured all these data, for so many past years. So, don't be surprised that the

\" lesser well known JCs \" today (in 2024) will become famous 2 years later, after year 2026 release of her first maiden, pioneering batch results.

Why ?

Because

under the \"70 Rank points\" system, the new MOE rule states that

even if you (student) studied so hard, were to sit for 4 H2 subjects in the National exam (2025), eventually, in the end,

your most worstly (badly) performed H2 subject, will just be converted into ... another H1 subject, in order to calculate your RP.

That means, initially no doubt u did take 4 H2 subjects. But in the end when come to compute your RP, after your A level results are released, only turn out to become ....

3 H2 + 1H1

Example
=======

say, for example, in your O level last year 2023, u took Double Pure Sciences (Physics + Chem), from xx Secondary school.

Then now (2024), u are a JC (1) Pupil, taking 4 H2 subjects (in PCME).

Who knows ?

maybe turn out in year 2026, u scored 3 As for (CME), but scored a grade \"D\" in Physics (A level).
So, out of your 4 H2 subjects, which is your worst performing H2 subject ?

Physics

Then, what happen to your Physics?

Answer -

automatically get converted, to become a H1 subject, during your computation of RP, for uni admission.

Also, if score poorly in Physics, perhaps some Engineering faculty, cannot get in.

I dare not imagine, that degree of great competition, fighting to enter uni ( NUS, NTU, SMU)

Ya, in the beginning, sounds very nice to hear students telling people around them,

\"hey !
I am taking 4 H2 subjects, not 3 H2 ... \"

Wait until, the time comes ... when u compute your RP.

i also agree that delivery of the academic curriculum may be one of the main factors contributing to the yoy better results performance. Seeing how my dd and her classmates fared and improved, gained her confidence from J1 to J2. Of course, I m also applauding the students who have put in tremendous efforts in the exam. Picking up from defeats in (one of ) the most difficult CT or prelim papers and still continue to put in alot of faith in themselves and the teachers.

I understand the ex-principal Mr Low, will also do a few walk-around to offer packed dinner to the students in the school campus at night, before CT or exam period. Caring teachers and principal is one of the draw.

Below is the slide on record performance in the recent A level results briefing.
https://postimg.cc/8fW53mJg
From this slide shown here, one can conclude that

Nanyang Junior College is very strong, in her Science stream. Especially, in her H2 Maths & H2 Chemistry.

H2 Translation : very few students take this subject, is a small class.

For H2 Physics :
2023 A level results, had shown a great improvement !

For H2 Literature :
2023 A level results, have also shown a great improvement !

H2 Bio & H2 Economics : not sure.
Perhaps, depend on luck,
see who is tutoring your CT (tutorial) group.

H2 History & H2 Geography : not sure

No,
because

now up to this year 2024, the final, last batch of students exiting under current \"90 RP\", there is No Automatic conversion of your weakest, most badly performed #4 H2 subject, into an H1 subject, to re-base back to \"70 RP\". If u happen to take 4 H2 subjects under \"90 RP\" rule, then just simply add up your Total 4 H2, to compute your RP. That's all

True enough. My child does not have fantastic results but is still taking 4 H2, same for his friends, all 4 H2. Therefore, I certainly do not think the school just focus on 3 H2.
You are right !

With nett 5 (Science), majority of JC (1) students are taking 4 H2 subjects.

Why ?

Amongst nett 5, majority of these JAE students admitted into NYJC, with nett (3 or 4) score. They could easily have joined RI / Hwa Chong too. But they don't want. They prefer, chose to come here (NYJC), instead.

At nett (3 or 4), these students could have gone to any JC, they desire. Correct or not ?

We are not talking about nett ( 18 or 19 or 20) points. That happened last time perhaps, in year 200x, two decades ago, 20 years ago. Time has since passed ! But, today, we are talking about majority coming in, with nett (3 or 4) points !

Yes, we all know that are also students who come in, with nett 5, since nett5 is the Cut off point. But the majority is not nett 5.

Just reflect.
Had they gone into RI / Hwa Chong, would they want to do 3 H2 or 4 H2 ? Of course, 4 H2 !

So, now that they are in NYJC instead of going to RI, u think they want to do 3 H2 or 4 H2 ?

Of course, 4 H2 lah !

Don't know how or when this myth started ... about majority of NYJC students doing 3 H2

Yes, perhaps one year later down the road, for those weaker students who can't cope, perhaps their JC (2) CT Form teachers will advise them to drop their weakest H2 subject to H1 level. But for right now, in JC (1), majority are taking 4 H2 subjects.

RP : Rank points
For a student taking 4H2s, the worst performing H2 will not be \"automatically\" converted to H1 and rebased to 70RP. This will only be done if it helps improve the RP. If it doesn't improve the RP, it will only be 3H2+GP.
