MOE pre-U scholarship
-
red rose:
Hi! Anyone knows roughly how many MOE Pre-U scholarships are given out every year? Thanks!
I am curious too. -
those apply for MOE Pre U scholarship need to go through a selection process. Anyone know the success rate?
-
For IP students, is their ESIS ($2400/yr) valid for 6 years? Are they still eligible to apply for this MOE PreU scholarship?
-
I read Pre U scholarship is on top of ESIS. IP students can apply too:

Yes to both questions.

Another further question to clarify is,

For \" IP \" students -
if say, for example,
there are Total 900 \"IP\" students in RI (at JC1 level),
does it mean that
1) ALL entire 900 students , coming from both IP cohort (RI boys + RGS girls) combined together,
can apply for MOE PreU scholarship concurrently,
and then wait for your turn to be short listed for an interview (scholarship)
OR
2) only those cream of the Top 10% of the entire JC1 (RI) cohort,
who have received specific invitation(s) from school (RI) to apply, then can apply ?
Otherwise, if never received any invitation from school at all, means cannot apply ?
-
assuming that let's say,
out of Total
1200 RI students at Level JC1 only, say,
900 are IP students, while the balance (remaining) are 300 JAE (O level) students, who have entered RI
at nett L1R5 score, from (2 to 4). -

Before u even get to know the success rate, first must find out, out of Total applicants who have applied, how many actually get short listed to attend the scholarship interview, first

All may apply, even if they have not been nominated by the JC. My daughter was not nominated, applied on her own, and was interviewed. For the record, she was unsuccessful. I don't know how many received the scholarship from RI, or across the nation.

Min academic criteria at end of sec 4 for IP students to be eligible for the scholarship is 8 points for L2R5. Not many can achieve that even in the IP school coupled with strong cca/leadership accolades plus recommendations from sch.

Any IP student can apply for the Pre-U Scholarship. But given that MOE specifically states that for JAE students, an L1R5 of 8 or less is needed, I would imagine, MOE will probably apply a similar criteria in shortlisting IP students at a first cut. As we all know, not all IP students have strong Sec 4 results - some are struggling with re-exams or to qualify for 4H2s or to advance to Year 5.

It is L2R5 not L1R5….some are strong in 1 language but not the other so it is quite challenging for the IP students to get 8 and below for L2 (ie LA and HCL) and R5. For JAE, they can use CL in lieu of HCL.

IP also can use CL in lieu of HCL, if they had taken O level CL either in Sec 3 or 4.

do not take any pu-hua (O level),
so in order
to qualify for L2R5 (IP) 8 points or less,
that means
your gao hua (O level) exam paper need to preferably score a distinction, either A1 or A2.
To score a distinction for gao hua or HCL (at O level), can be challenging ! -

There are IP students who either don't do HCL (and they take Sec 4 O level CL) , or even if they had done HCL, had taken O level CL in Sec 3. These tend to be the kids who are weaker in Chinese (like my kids oops).

so, this L2R5 inside, the 8 points or better for IP students intending to apply for scholarship,
can be
O-level ( pu hua taken either at Year 3 or at Year 4 or gao hua) ?
Not compulsory that, this L2R5 inside,
it must be O-level (gao hua), cannot be pu hua (O-level) ?
============================
What is this \"L2\" definition, inside the L2R5 ?
Must one of the L2, be gao-hua ?
Can my L2 be
(English + German / Japanese / Spanish / French),
If I am an IP student taking foreign language ? -

for all IP students in the eight IP-JCs in Singapore, namely, inside
(RI / Hwa Chong / Dunman High / River Valley High / Victoria / Temasek / National / Eunoia) these IP-JCs ?
If suppose one of your \"L2\" does include either O-level (pu hua or gao hua),
then,
what will happen?
Many IP students will scramble to take pu hua (O level), at end of Sec 3 in November 20xx.
Why ?
Simply because
Who doesn't know (common sense) that it is
so much more simpler / easier
to score a distinction A1 or A2
At pu-hua (O level),
compared to scoring
Distinction A1 or A2 at HCL or gao hua (O level) ?
But,
if the definition of L2R5 only can be gao hua (O level), then
even if IP students have taken pu-hua (O level), at the end of their Year 3, also no use. -
Lol i think none of us knows for sure anything beyond what’s written on the MOE website which seems sl8ghy different this year and last year…maybe you can write to MOE to ask?
I only can share based on my kids’ experiences. -

I will clarify with MOE,
what is the actual definition of this L2R5, for IP students
