I can imagine how stressful it can be to aim to get in IP. I am glad I didn't realised abt this during mine kid's time. Never give Chinese tuition. She would loathe Chinese more if so. Now at least she is gladly doing hcl in sec sch, only at passing level 😅 -

He sounds like he's been traumatised by work! I guess he needs time to recover - maybe he needs some kind of counselling? But at some point, he will need to explore some deep truths for himself and ask some existential questions. What does he want to do with his life? Does he think there is a greater purpose to life than earning to live and accumulate? Since he is willing to live very simply, he could use his undoubted intelligence and abilities to serve others.

I definitely resonate with this: “I think it’s terrifying to wait until you’re 60 to give yourself permission to be free. By that time, already looking backwards, not forwards. A lot of life to remember; not that much left to live.”
I am now 60, and while I'm not rich or successful or famous, I am happy with the life I remember, and look forward to life I have left. My husband and I could have chosen to earn and climb the career ladder till 60, and only now start asking those existential questions. I'm glad we did it earlier. And I hope this chap will find some purpose in his life too, even if it isn't what others might think normal. -
He has “climbed the ladder” and found it to be leaning against the “wrong” wall for him. Better to learn it earlier than later. Yes, may he find a deeper purpose (it may have been too personal to share). I found some in parenthood myself.

It’s either parents stress when kids are 12yo or later when they are 16yo (O level).
Parents IP-associated stress is largely due to the government’s policy. Thanks to Tony Tan we have this elitist IP thing. If not, everyone gets to be reshuffled at O level, how good.
My DD1 was from SCGS Pri which has affiliation to SCGS Sec O level. If not for the IP thing, I think I should be the one who don’t even know what is stress! LOL! But…..
I also think those affliated pri sch girls look more carefree at our sch. Without having to worry abt getting into IP, yes can reduced a lot stress. -

For the young main the in article, I hope he will find something more to do eventually. I expect he needs some time to recover and consider what to do, but just living as a \"retiree\" is not something I would encourage for the decades from 30 to 60. There is a real danger that he will reach 60, look back, and regret that he didn't do more - not necessarily to have earned more or climbed other ladders, but something of service to society or others. -

Actually I don't understand what it mean? For a primary or lower secondary student, study hard for all subjects in school - is a basic requirement or their main responsibility, why need to climb the ladder? What is the wrong wall? Sorry, I am a stupid person, don't understand 😅

Didnt read the earlier posts in detail.
I agree with the last sentence.
In short, during schooling, the grades count. During working, the grades ie salaries count.
We are tied to grades
Sometimes, the society needs to have some \"grading \" to reward those hard working people. I cannot image if there is no grading among the same post of staff in my company, then everyone one will be a lazy cat.
