Hi, can parent/student share insights about mandatory boarding in Year 5 please? My child and I are both curious about what to expect (if he gets to join NUSH next year).

        Thanks in advance! 🙏

Boarding is during year 5, which is also the year that you have to complete an advanced research project. This made travelling to the labs easier since they (A* STAR/NUS) are located close to school and you have more time to complete it. My time during hostel was also really fulfilling since I had more time with friends, able to go sleep in the middle of school timetable, wake up 15 mins before school start etc. There was also hostel bonding events with people from your cluster and overall, it was really fun. The only hard rule was a curfew of 9pm iirc which was enforced by fingerprint sensor. The area is also really safe with all gates verified through fingerprint and a overall in charge, usually a teacher or PhD student, for each cluster. Food is ehh so don’t expect much. Definitely an experience I would recommend as you get to have many unique moments with friends and learn to be independent, outside of your home environment.

What is IMSO? Heard about a parent talking about outreach programme for selected students, what is it about?

So much hype, about NUS High.
Certainly, no doubt about it, NUS High is indeed a good Sec school.

                Or

am I ignorant, hence never hear of ?

Actually, the Dean (Principal) of NUS High ought to share info with parents : where do these NUS High graduates end up in career ? So many past several batches have already graduated. Surely, have sufficient info gathered.

                See !

It is one thing, to know so many excited, starry eyed P6 students trying to DSAc into this school.
                Entering, is only the beginning.

But, how u end up in ... is even far more important, than how u have started out, at the starting line.

For those of us who had gone through life, have u heard of ....

How or what u end up in, is more important than
how you started your journey ?
In history, there have been heros, in the beginning, very popular ! Hailed as so and so. Greatly been respected, basked in glory! But in the end, when they die, they led a sad, miserable life.

Another trend i found is NUSHie alumni are pretty quiet in their achievements probably coz they hold positions that require them to protect what they are doing. If you do a search on Linkedin you may then discover the type of univerisity, companies, positions the graduates from NUS High is now holding. That will be the best testimony.

It’s the culture. They are naturally good, they met the bar and so there’s nothing to prove except to do justice to and pay forward what they have been endowed with.
You will find they are usually self-deprecating and humble. “Quiet confidence” is what a teacher described to me.

However, it is not good when others who don’t know the school well start to cast aspersions. NUSHighs types likely not interested to rise to challenge to have to prove them wrong.

Highly encourage anyone who is interested in the school to visit the open house yourself , talk to actual parents and the students. Talk to the alumni too ( years senior and immediate graduating classes) and teachers. Do your own due diligence for if you are coming to the school with ethos to experiment, explore and excel, the ones who are not prepared to are likely not a fit.

I have now a handful of friends who admitted they full regret not taking up the DSA offer as they now see what could have been after going through the entire 6 yr journey AND university admissions process. One of them said the son expressed it as having been given an offer to Oxbridge but then opting to take … instead. I can say that if student is really a pre-med, pre-engineering, CS, math, chem, bio and physics => the opportunities, resources and even global branding (global elite unis and local scholarship committees) is on a different scale.

Hi, wondering if any parents have any experience with NUSH Accelerated Enrichment Courses offered to P6 kids? My boy is offered CM1331A and PC1331A. Any recommendations on which course to take?

Call the school ask them if your boy can speak to seniors who have accelerated and taken these subjects. Generally it would be your kid goes on to Chem CM2…. Or Physics PC2 when joining year 1. Gradually if they keep the pace, they will be reading Uni modules by Y4/5. It usually coincides on the Olympiad the child will focus on but also be aware they may change their mind or start to prefer CS or Bio as they progress into the school.
