Totally agree!! \"General core courses\" or \"cross-disciplinary courses\" sound cutting edge, but if one were to scrutinise, some of these courses may Not be the best use of time for certain student profiles
..
Her Econs degree is a BA, but that's just a name. The content of the course was pretty much like any other Econs course, without the distractions of \"general core courses\" and \"cross-disciplinary courses\" or whatever they are called in universities that are more modular.

FWIW, I looked at the Econ department at a few different universities. Some schools are offering BA or BS in Econ while others have something like Econ, Quantitative Econ, and Econ + Computing. Even for some of the more selective universities, not all of them look math heavy.
I guess it depends on what one wants to do and where they end up applying for jobs. Some employers may treat it much like another arts degree while others will be looking for a lot more on the quant side. -

yes agree of the variety of courses , looking at Faculty of Arts/SS + Science ( now called college of Humanities&Science, CHS) which Econs is offered here there are a lot of choices to mix with for 2nd majors, minors combinations. When i compare to the sch of computing, which is my ds only choice faculty , the choices of 2ndmajors, and minors are really limited to a few only, far cry from CHS . No wonder CHS is quite popular too.

Yes, the second major in Business Analytics is a possible pathway for non-School of Computing students.
So this student's primary home Facuty is CHS.
NUS offers great (and to me, unparalleled) flexibility in how one can mix and match offerings even from across Faculties.
All majors eligibility, choices are subject to results , demand and supply. Popular choices such as Econs+ Biz Analytics / data scientists / Comp Sci - should be tough competition to get in. The NUS tech/data sci related single degree RP is minimum 85 , hear fr ds class, sch, friend i know not all 85 get in as well, depends on which subjects are A graded ( Math, Phy surely need to be A to begin with in such faculty ) -

Admission to NUS' Computer Science is pretty tough these days - 85 may not guarantee a spot even as 1st choice. (First choice bonus points does apply to CS).

For those reading degree programmes offered by NUS School of Computing, I'd highly recommend checking out the NUS Overseas Colleges programme. -

Actually on the contrary, the formation of CHS is actually not a so good idea as redditors have mentioned. Hearsay NUS is trying to save the fledging FASS by combining with Science faculty to have this “inter-disciplinary” approach to education. So students who used to study deep into their science major now has to carve out 1/3 of the curriculum to study humanities subjects (common curriculum) which is of no interest or value to the job.

And students like my child who is targetting to do social sciences/humanities, can no longer easily get into the old FASS, because after the merger with Science fac, the COP aka IGP is skewed sky high by all the science stream people

He likely go other uni instead… -

That’s why it’s called the College of Humanities and Science?

I read on Reddit that one guy who met CHS IGP and a Gold medalist for MO was not selected for CHS. He ended up doing mathematics at NTU. Maybe that should be where he belongs. Because all students need to submit ABA write-up about themselves, i believe those who are keen and can handle both Humanities and Sc is what NUS is looking for. -

There are other comments that touch on the part in bold, but more or less this is the UK vs. the US model debate. Anyways, it is interesting to read some of the comments (both sides). I used to have a stronger opinion here, but now I think it is a complicated question. I can kind of see one kid skewing each way, so I don't know...

I'm not sure where the hearsay on saving FASS came from but I certainly can accept that there will be redditors and students who think CHS is a bad idea.

As regards carving out 1/3 of curriculum to study common curriculum (which has both STEM and non-STEM modules), I would say NUS or the universities probably are more in tune with the job market developments than we as individuals are. Apart from professional degrees, I would imagine most jobs now want and demand multiple and a range of skills. The old model of students having to choose between Arts or Sciences (i.e. FASS or FOS) is restricting students in their skills development, and forcing them to make a stark choice at 18 years old as to whether they want to pursue Arts/Social Sciences, or Science majors. CHS opens the opportunity for all their students to explore, and combine combinations of Science, Maths and Arts/Social Science majors and minors. I personally think it's brilliant, and it is closest to what a US university education is like.
That said, it won't appeal to all students - my kids are not keen. -

The big qn is; what are employers looking for? Do we need STEM employees with humanities background as well?
