Why students study more during school holidays
-
Oh yes sorry I forgot to add it’s more specific than East Asia - South Korea, China, Japan, Singapore and increasingly, Vietnam. There is a certain cultural aspect to it.

For a very long time it was a mainstream Asian culture thingy women were not suppose to be educated. Fortunately we had few brave/wise individuals in late 19th century in China that started movement that discard this culture that no longer serve the time. Imagine all of them back then have the mindset that culture cannot be changed, what will happened to all of us now? 🥹

Yes. To me, In essence, it is giving us more options and lessen the societal pressure when choosing a different lifestyle from main stream. It’s up to individuals whether to take it.
My view (and I hope this is what the PM is saying) is that all these patterns, and whatever else people decide on, should be acceptable. There should be no judgement that one is \"better\" than the other as long as there are not laws broken, and they behave responsibly (care for their children, elderly, etc). Let's be willing to embrace variety - many will continue to work fairly continuously through their lives, but some of these may choose a career that isn't the highest-paying one they could find. Some may choose to take career breaks - to study, have kids, try other jobs, be a volunteer, etc. They may then have a second wind and go back to the same career, or try something else. Some may indeed work very hard for a limited no. of years, then relax all the rest of their lives on what they have saved. To each his own. -

There is another video that goes into length on his backgrounds. I find his narration mesmerising. I read he was good in literature during his school days.
The video is lovely.
I like his personal sharing. Though I am not sure whether if as a child today, he or his parents would have made the same choices. The system, environment, peer influence etc are different. Still, I am heartened he is cognizant of this as an issue whic his why he is even addressing itLet's see what changes he may bring on.
East Asian societies are generally very academically oriented, as evidenced by the level of hothousing, tuition and enrichment.

To broaden definitions of success to go beyond academic and material achievements is the same as “All Schools Are Good Schools”.
DPM Heng is not wrong, if every parent believes that all schools are good schools and all kids just attend a secondary sch nearest their home, then who cares about PSLE scores? But how many parents believe that all schools are equally good?
Change of mindset is not easy especially if citizens see ministers sending their own kids to top schools. Likewise, to look beyond material success, unless citizens all prosper together or all are stuck in poverty together, otherwise if there are people who stay in private and can afford to own cars while some are stuck in 2rm or 3rm flat, there will be social issues. One fine day the citizens will realize why the hell they listen to the govt and ended up stuck in a pigeonhole while some of their peers who worked very hard, have all moved on to a bigger house??!! -
Whatever it is, the next gen shd be able to afford decent home ownership. Taking a 5r bto in woodlands (already considered a very ulu location) also cost $400±$500+. The govt has also worked out based on such cost, to finance this over 25y, the couple need to fork out $1000+ per mth after paying almost $90k+ of down payment. If u work out the sums, you understand why they need more money. And why 5r? Because hdb are getting smaller and smaller and you don’t want couple to run out of space when they got kids or have flexi work arrangements at home.

You need to buy a 5 room bto / resale, not a 3 room hdb flat because

1) when your kids are born, children need a room of their own, to keep their own privacy, have their own study table / clothes cupboard, closet, etc.
2) sometimes, the maid whom u hired to look after your young toddlers / children, also need a room to herself too.
3) sometimes, your kids or you (parent) may catch a new strain of covid virus from schools / work place, need to be isolated at home, to prevent the further risk of spreading the virus to your family members.

Buying a 3 room flat is meant for singles, who have already reached the minimum age of 35 years old. -
To each his own where each person carves out his or her own path. I hv a child who knows what she wants and works very hard at the expense of health (I am actually very concerned). I hv 2 others who are brilliant in their own ways but may not necessarily follow the usual top talent/scholar paths bc they don’t know what they want. For these 2, perhaps finding their passion is more impt and allowing them to make mistakes along the way to find the most suitable path.

The profiles and preferences of each child are different.
Noone is my family is particularly brilliant or talented or passionate in a single area. I’m grateful that notwithstanding, we have adjusted to the system as is, and find a way we that works for us and we are happy with.
I’m not overly concerned with housing for the next generation as HDB is still doing a good job at providing a roof over people’s heads. Basic needs of Singaporeans are still reasonably met. But this doesn’t mean I don’t see the possibly negative / ill effects of the widening inequality of the different housing types, and I do think it will become a problem in future as it is another form of ‘divide’. Some say that it is far more difficult to ‘upgrade’ now than in the past. -
Hdb needs to re-look at their home ownership policy. It just sounded like our property market is heading that of HK’s. But why should it be? It’s in the hands of the govt rather than land predominantly owned by private developers in HK.
I cannot understand why a wdlds BTO (not near mrt) costs half a mil directly from primary market.
