Practical question. For child who’s going to study overseas, do u still keep their local mobile number so they can stay contactable with their SG friends? Right now the plan they subscribe to is quite high cost with unlimited data. Any idea if we switch provider to those simba or low cost carrier, can we still number port with low or minimal fee?
Also do you pack light for the child and get the child to buy all necessities locally or send boxes over? My child is leaving end mar so getting a bit anxious

My kid kept the Singapore number - just port to a cheap $10 plan - it won’t cost much to port, and also using an e-sim overseas number.

It is not uncommon to send boxes over but I think the usual option for most is just riding on parents’ luggage allowance (if parents are sending kids off).

A trusty reliable luggage bag, easy to handle and wheel, is important as it must be able to take 20 kg (or however much you are filling it) and travel well on trains, uneven pavement or whatever mode of transport the kid is taking to reach the destination. The last thing you want to happen is to handle a broken or burst luggage bag.

When destination country’s eSIM is set up on the iPhone, you can go to Setting to

• On data: Default“data” to that eSIM. That will stop Spore line from being use for data. This is what I do when I am overseas.
• On call: I don’t make call when overseas but from the setup option I see, can do this: Default out going call to use that eSIM , so when make call, it will auto use that eSIM. Singapore line will not be use for outgoing call then . But when receive a call, have to see incoming call from which line. If from spore line, receiving the call will incur IDD rate bcos it’s from spore line. If incoming call is from esim, receiving it will be destination country rate.
• On sms. I don’t send sms when I am overseas but from the setup option I see, can do this: default sending sms to that esim. so when sending sms, it will auto use that eSIM. Singapore line will not be use for sending SMS. But when receive a sms, it can be from either eSIM or Singapore line. But it doesn’t matter bcos receiving sms is free. And SMS from spore will continue to be received.

In summary, On iPhone, there are Setting options to manage multiple lines. To default call/data/sms actions to use which line. Or set setting individually for each line, such as totally turn off Singapore line temporarily when overseas

And turn off Singapore line “mobile data” too when overseas. Call and sms will still be available on that line

I think the 2FA authentication for most banking functions are pushed out through their apps than SMS nowadays. It’s troublesome when you change phones though, as you need to re-install and authenticate the device.

About packing - I’m a great believer in packing light and buying in the destination country. Partly because lugging stuff over is hard, especially for girls, even if a parent goes to help with luggage allowance. My daughter brought mainly clothes which we already owned and supplemented when she was overseas. That way, she didn’t have to 2nd-guess what she would need, and could look more “local” (that’s something we feel is good to aim for). And also some personal stuff that she felt she really wanted to bring. The most important thing she specially bought here was a small rice cooker as we didn’t think she would be able to get a small one easily in the UK - I only saw 1.8L ones advertised. Maybe big cities will have a better range. I think she packed a few packets of sauces too, maybe 2-3.

I hope we don’t get another Covid, but packing up in a hurry is also hard! When Covid struck, and international students were advised to leave asap, my daughter had to help a friend pack up her room - she had brought lots of stuff from Singapore (3 person’s luggage allowance), and was really stressed by the amount to pack up. And she hadn’t made use of quite a lot of the stuff her mother had asked to bring to the UK!

And about bags - make sure your daughter can lift and manage the suitcase and hand luggage single-handedly. There may be the (perhaps more than) occasional steps, and she may sometimes need to lift the suitcase on and off conveyor belts etc. And that she can walk a reasonably distance with all the stuff. Even if a parent is going along for the first journey, it’s best to get her used to managing single-handed.

Another suggestion. If going for multiple lines on single phone approach, Your DD can try getting use to working with multiple lines while still in Singapore. Anything unsure will be easier to resolve while still here. You can subscribe to a cheap, no contract eSIM plan with local telco. Set it up on the phone. And test out setting/managing voice/sms/ data over 2 lines. Cancel that test line after testings completed.

@doodbug Yes some banks like UOB have transitioned to digital tokens for 2FA. But it still sends me SMS for potential fraud alerts eg suspicious transactions. And eg my other banks although have face recognition login with my HP, but the 2FA additional step i have SMS and/or email verification (no etoken option).
