Happy Saturday! Hope all families and parents had a great start to weekend πŸ™‚ We have also just released an article discussing the topic of whether children should be exposed to music and art at a young age.

Many parents instinctively feel that music and art are β€œgood” for children. Piano lessons, drawing classes, dance, and creative play often feature prominently in early childhood plans. Yet in a system that places heavy emphasis on academic performance, parents understandably ask whether such exposure is enrichment or distraction.

The answer is not straightforward and that is precisely why the discussion matters. Not every child responds to music or art in the same way. Some children gravitate naturally toward creative expression; others may prefer different forms of engagement.

Happy Thursday! Hope all families and parents are looking forward to the end of the work and school week πŸ™‚

We have also just released an article discussing whether students should aim high even though falling short may hurt even more.

Students are often told to dream big. Aim high. Set ambitious goals. In theory, this advice feels empowering. In practice, many students struggle with the emotional cost when expectations are not met.

This raises a difficult but necessary question: Should students pursue lofty expectations if the risk of disappointment is so high? Or is managing expectations a form of self-protection rather than self-limitation?

Perhaps instead of asking, β€œWhat if I fail?”, a more constructive question might be: β€œIf things do not go as planned, will I still know how to move forward?” That confidence matters more than any single result.

Give it a read and let us know your comments and what your perspective is on this key issue.

Happy Saturday! Hope all families and parents had a great start to weekend πŸ™‚ We have also just released an article discussing the topic of gratitude vs. complacency and how students can better learn to be content while still being ambitious.

Gratitude is often praised as a virtue. Students are encouraged to appreciate what they have, to be thankful for opportunities, and to avoid entitlement. At the same time, they are told to push harder, aim higher, and never settle.

This dual message can feel contradictory. How can one be content and still ambitious? At what point does gratitude quietly turn into complacency, or ambition into chronic dissatisfaction?

Ultimately, the most resilient students are often those who combine gratitude with discipline. They work hard not because they are dissatisfied with themselves, but because they value what they have been given and want to honour it.

Happy Lunar New Year to all families! Hope everyone is enjoying the holiday period and festivities so far πŸ™‚

We have just released an article discussing the topic of why rote memorisation feels effective but may fail students in the long-run

In Singapore’s exam-driven education system, rote memorisation often feels like the safest strategy. It is predictable, time-efficient, and aligned with assessment formats that reward recall. For students under pressure, memorising model answers and standard phrases can produce quick results.

But what feels effective in the short run often hides deeper costs; costs that surface later, when problems become unfamiliar and answers are no longer predictable.

To be clear, memorisation is not inherently harmful. Certain elements: formulas, vocabulary, foundational facts, must be memorised. The misconception lies in treating memorisation as the primary strategy rather than a supporting tool. Without understanding, memorisation is brittle.

In a system like Singapore’s, the goal is not to reject exams, but to prepare students to handle them with adaptability. Understanding builds resilience. Memorisation builds dependence.
