We have just released an article discussing the topic of helping children open up through communication.
It is a familiar moment in many homes. A parent asks, “How was school today?” The response comes quickly, almost automatically. “Fine.” A pause follows. The conversation could continue, but often, it does not. The moment passes, and with it, whatever the child might have been thinking or feeling.
From the outside, it seems like a lack of willingness to share. But more often than not, it is something else entirely. The child may not know where to begin, how to articulate their thoughts, or whether what they have to say is worth saying at all.
What appears as silence is not always emptiness. Sometimes, it is simply unexpressed.
