I wanted to share my experience with the DSA application process for Chinese instruments during the recent DSA exercise for my daughter.
We applied to two schools, one with a COP of 14 and the other with a COP of 10. She was offered a confirmed place by the first school but was unsuccessful in her application to the second.
Through this journey, we learned several important factors that parents may want to consider before applying for a particular DSA talent area. From our understanding, schools will review students’ P4 and P5 academic results obtained from MOE before deciding whether to shortlist applicants for interviews.
Although my daughter secured interviews with both schools, the experience was very different. Applicant numbers at more popular schools can be five to six times higher than those at less popular schools. During the auditions, many students even brought along their own musical instruments, some of which were quite bulky, which highlighted just how competitive the process can be.
One key takeaway for us was that a child’s AL score should not be too far from the school’s COP if they are to stand a realistic chance of being considered. It is also important to pay attention to schools that require or place a stronger emphasis on Higher Chinese, as this can make a significant difference if your child is not taking Higher Chinese.
While parents naturally tend to focus on their preferred schools when applying through DSA, it is equally important to be realistic about how closely their child’s academic results align with the school’s COP.
This is simply my personal experience and observation from this year’s process, and it may not be fully accurate or applicable in every case. I hope it provides some useful insights for parents who are exploring the DSA route. Thank you.
