We have just released an article discussing the topic of how parents can help their children become independent learners in Singapore.
“Can you sit beside me while I do my homework?” For many parents, this is a familiar request. You sit down to help with one question, but soon find yourself explaining every instruction, checking each answer and reminding your child to continue.
Supporting your child is natural. Yet as schoolwork becomes more demanding, it is useful to help them take greater ownership of their learning, with guidance that matches their age and needs.
A September 2026 Institute of Policy Studies study offers a timely starting point. According to CNA’s coverage, 79 per cent of parents surveyed agreed that children should be allowed to fail and learn from their mistakes, compared with 62.2 per cent in 2016. This reflects a change in parental attitudes; it does not establish which teaching methods are most effective.
The practical challenge is turning that willingness into everyday habits: giving children space to attempt, make mistakes and ask for help thoughtfully.
