Do you stay far from the school ? My #2 can't sit down for long. She will get her work done and then run off to do other stuff. Hopefully she will have no problems adjusting to P1 next yr.

Not far, outside 2 km. We just did a rough calculation- he spends abt 7.5 hrs away from home (vs 6 hr if transfer to nearby sch). If he can pay more attention in class and the teachers doing a good job, we would not hv this issue of spending extra time for self studying at home.

        Hi Jennifer,

We stay within walking distance from the school…by chance. Bought this flat as it’s 2 km from my parents to enjoy $50K.

Out of 2km isn’t far actually…sometimes I find that time is equally tight even though son is in morning session. Time is spent getting him to do his homework, take his nap, to wake up, revise his work. That’s one day gone.

          Hi dyh,

It's too late at P6, at least not in current education context. Foundation is built at lower primary. Since your son is in Pei Hwa, I guessed you would have realized that consistent revision is important. Most parents follow the school website closely for Term 1, 2 and 4 to plan exam time-table.
          .
oh, yes, it is impt to do consistent work. i meant to say no need to worry until the \"paranoid\" level about exam results as long as consistent work is done. life is more than exam results. some children can be late developers. i was one myself. 😉 of cos, i do worry about my kids' results but what is more impt is whether they put in the effort. if they have put in the effort, then i can be at peace.

            Verykiasu,

            Agree, agree. 🙂
P1-2 are the important 2 years to build foundation. There are 2 'jumps' - P3 and P5. Results may dip at P3, as subject depth will be tougher. P5 is the year schools start to prepare students for PSLE, as P6 is usually for revision. Not much teaching is done according to a cousin whose son is in P6 this year.

P3 will add in new subject - Science

P3 will have GEP testing for selection

P5 will determine whether to continue / drop HMT

            P6 - DSA : some schools ask for P4 results too....almost all schools ask for P5 & P6.

Some DSA starts at P5 (!!)

and PSLE will test all the stuff from P3 onwards .....

at end of P4 school briefing, principal stressed that PSLE preparation starts at P5

P6 June holiday will have extra lessons

P6 term 2 & 3 will have supplemental lessons in the afternoons

By July of P6, all syllabus would have been completed

August : revision with full papers

very good summary. thanks for the heads up. Is your child from Pei Hwa?

              Hi dyh,

All parents want the best for their kids, but not all kids are able to live up to expectations. As such, there are many kids who are visiting psychiatrists now.

My son is in an average class. Hubby and I feel that as long as he can stay put, it's tantamount to putting in effort. It will be a bonus if he moves up but we are ok with where he is.
In Pei Hwa, I feel that there is much pressure on the students to perform and be resilient.

PSLE matters, but the 6 years of primary school life is more important.
              Don't you think so ?
Just out of curiosity, any parents here have their kids transferred out of PH to another school before? Would like to hear from their experience whether their kids think the new school is better, same or worse in terms of developing them...

                Hi

P6 June holiday will have extra lessons (my DS has 4 lessons-Spore Discovery Center for EL,Sungei Buloh for Sci, only maths, CL in sch)
P6 term 2 & 3 will have supplemental lessons in the afternoons
Pei Hwa starts supplementary classes from P5 onwards, every tues and thurs 2pm to 3.30pm, alternate subjects for odd and even wks. Take note that u dont arrange tuition on these 2 days.

Know of someone who transfered child from Pei Hwa to Tao Nan due to shifting of house. I don't really know the family very well, but the parents did say the culture was quite different but as nurturing for their child in terms of academic and emotional needs.

Another one or two that I know, transfered as child was selected for GEP, so I guess that was for a different reason to compare.

I am just curious for parents with children in Pei Hwa, does your child have homework? My girl is in P2 this year and I think she has been very relax in term 1 and 2. No homework from teacher and the only thing she needs to do is the weekly Ting xie, mo sie and spelling.

My dd is in P2. She does have the usual EMC homework till now, though not daily. She has weekly journals too, even for the June Hols (4 entries). Her teacher is super fast in reading their journals! My dd also managed to complete the Reading Activity Card during the June hols and a self-authored chinese storybook as Chinese HW.

In conjunction with the Math topic on Money, the teachers had been bringing the kids to the supermarket to do marketing! My dd’s class will be going to Cold Storage today. The groups had been planning the items to buy and budgeting for this marketing trip. All items will be consumed tomorrow during lesson. How exciting! Brought back my memories when I brought my older P4s for marketing trip at Giant IMM. Are we still under the Innovation and Enterprise - Teach Less, Learn More strategy?

My dd had never need to worry about marketing…it’s quite interesting to see her getting all serious and feeling important for this little project. It was like her MOST top priority event of the week! Haha.
