Travel: Thailand - Chiangmai and Chiangrai
-
hi hi
we was just up with my family including my girls, 7,6,1 at Chiangmai and Chiangrai 1 month ago. Peaceful and quiet. bad for the locals due to the drop in tourist. extremely delightful experience for visitors.
stayed at Chedi Hotel - great experience and convenience too!
we met a local Tu-tu uncle who speaks good english. He will drive you around town and outskirt. Excellent local induction! Very reasonable rate and flexible too!

Wow!! Thanks for the info!! I will try to contact him. We will be going to Chiangmai and Chiangrai in November...
Where did he bring you to? Did you go to the tribe (to see long neck woman) ? What places you visited ? Please share more...
We will be staying at Holiday Inn Chiangmai..
Thanks -
We spent 2 half day mornings with him. He picked us around 930am and end about 230 pm.
On Day 1, he bought us to several factory outlets - i particular like the thai silk village. Designs are modern. He will bring us to their local restuarant for lunch. very afforable and nice!
On Day 2 which was a Sunday, I asked to go to their local markets. He took us to their local fruit market, kind of like wholesales. There was a Sunday market which opens about 12 nn. There was a JJ market for handicraft, thai painting etc. JJ opens around 4 in the evening. So we didnt had a chance to see the stuff.
We were there 6 days. Very relax! Went out on alternate or half days. We did go for 1 day trip to Chiangrai and quarter day to the elephant farm. The rest was just half days around town. You can also take a boat trip which will bring you to a herd farm.
My girls saw Long Neck ladies at one of the villages in Chiangrai. Free entrance for children. So my girls went in with the tour guide. -
frankly, Chiangmai and Chiangrai are places that never cross my mind as a holiday destination that young pre-schoolers and lower primary may enjoy.
Beside the elephant rides, what else did your children enjoyed there?

Honestly for yound children, anywhere for holiday is a great experience for them!!!
Besides the elephant ride, our hotel stay was a great experience. The food and service was fabulous. Its is a friendly town, away from the hustle of city life. It is easy place to move around with young children. There is also a major shopping centre like our Robinson.
For this trip, besides the elephants, we rode on ox cart, horse carriages, bamboo rift and boat rides.
All in all, its was great fun!!
My only regret probably is when I asked my kids what they liked or remembered about Chiangmai - both of them echoed its the swimming pool that they like most. sigh!!! -

We just back from Chiangmai Chiangrai trip this week…quite exploring and eye opening for us…smtg different if compare to those urban countries…
We stay at Le-Meridien Chiangmai…a wonderful hotel with great staffs…and free 1 hr full body massage for all of us including my dd.
A must visit to Golden triangle and cruise Mekong river and elephant ride.
Weather = Singapore weather, so just bring light cloth -
Went Chiangmai & Chiangrai in 2006. I loved the trip there. There are many things for the kids to see, especially if their are like 5 and above. I went when DS was only 1yr and DD 3yrs old.
Elephant shows and rides, silkworm factory, pottery factory, orchid farm and I think the queen’s palace which has a garden that is so nice. Weather is cooling but not cold. We went to the golden triangle, visited the long necked tribe and also the opium museum. Saw how they got the silk out of the silkworm cocoon. Saw how they hand made those paper umbrellas. Went to the highest spot and the northern most part of Thailand and cooked some eggs in some hot spring somewhere, cannot remember where. Haha.
All in all, a different experience from the usual Thailand that we know, beaches and shopping. -

Have nvr been to Chiangmai & Chiangrai before. Is it better to do F&E or with package tours? If F&E, easy to book day tour? If package tour, pls recommend the tour agency. TIA
