All About Fairness of PV

I think it all boils down to the situation one is in. If there are parents who shift there temporarily to get into the school and then move back, then those have an integrity issue.


There are also parents who genuinely move near to the school they PV into in the hope that their kids get into the school and they do not have to travel far.

I don’t know what criteria any principal sets in accepting pvs - all I can say is that it’s a pretty thankless task. Accept too many pvs, kena whacked; accept too few and people complain it’s tougher than job interview.

But I agree with jedamum, whatever has happened, let us all be forward looking and make sure our kids enjoy the next 6 years of their life.

One should know the rules of the game below engaging it. Likewise for PV, the parents need to know all the rules set by MOE and the schools. More importantly the history of the no. of applicants for 2B for the last 5yrs. Most important during PV find out where most parents stay like within 1km, 1-2km or outside 2km (if u can). From there u will more or less know what are your chances.

I think this whole anomaly arises because the principal’s ‘promise’ or ‘criteria’ as spelt out to parents who apply for PV is inconsistent with MOE’s rules.


Why say "I will choose all PVs to be >2km away" (in a bid to give more ‘chances’ to those staying further away and create a more ‘level playing field’) when the rules are that when it comes down to the crunch, when push comes to shove, when applications exceed places of PV, priority is given based on distance?

If the principal truly said that at the start (which is debatable, since some forummers have verified that they were selected as PV even though they live nearer than 2km away), then he should be able to see it thru to the end. i.e. does not suffice to say ‘pls don’t play the proximity game’. Rather he should say, all PVs were selected because they lived >2km away, and all will stand an equal chance, i.e. all will have to ballot if applications exceed places.

Then there would be less of such grievances emerging.

As far as I know, other principals don’t ‘promise’ or impose such a >2km criteria on their PVs. whilst it might seem to level the playing field since those who stay <2km already have the bite of the 2C cherry, it is inconsistent with MOE’s rules and confuses parents. Everywhere else, parents who PV and stay within 1km know that they will have priority vs those who stay further. that’s how it’s always been, so can’t quite fault these parents for moving if they weren’t aware of this >2km criteria.

guess moral of the story is: principals should not make promises they have no power to keep.

Actually, I would say that principals should not take in too many PVs and enjoy 'free labour'...leaving these poor parents to be subjected to MOE's rules when the school is over-subscribed. PVs service the school in many aspects...whether it's under the hot sun, early morning madness, bring kids to/fro on Saturdays etc etc.

I’m one of those PVs that when selected, decided to shift within 1km of the sch. I was outfront with this as in my apln letter, I clearly stated that this will be my plan should I be selected. To the sch, selecting me as a PV will be no different from selecting someone within 1km of sch. If the sch has a problem with that, surely I won’t be selected. An ex-colleague of mine was staying within 1km for years when he got selected.


So it concerns me when a different sort of picture is being painted in this forum. But that’s still ok. There’ll always be differences in a public forum like this. I respect that. The best way to move forward is to confirm with the sch. And even if in the end there’s still differences, surely at our age we can deal with disagreements.

What really saddens me is that there are forumers here who will resort to personal attacks and even curses when there’re disagreements. To me, this is counter-productive and uncalled for.

i have not personally seen what was written previously as the mod has efficiently removed them, but i must say that this forum is one of the more 'protected' forum that i have been to.

What was previously posted in the thread has been kindly deleted by Chief Kiasu. Like you mentioned, I'm glad this forum is protected by people who are out to destroy the peace we have enjoyed here.

I fully empathise with PVs devoting hours and yet not able to place kids in choice school. This could be a very disappointing experience. That said, still, personal attacks, names calling are totally unnecessary especially in this case. I appreciate this being moved out out of PHPPS thread. Thanks.
