Janet, I guess it's good to start early. He can discover his style in the midst of practising. Reading widely helps too. As long as he is inspired, and expresses from within, he should be able to write well. I have also started a different approach to help my dd with Chinese Compo. The SA1 method of memorising scenarios is too risky. She has to learn to be flexible and express herself creatively but sincerely. I believe that will help her to develop her own writing style, hence makes the story more original and hopefully gives the reader something to enjoy.HI E3,
I bought that book with English phrases to help with compo writing...wow, the English used is really cheam !!! Anyway, I'm getting my son to start practicing for his SA2 compo...this way, hopefully
his Paper I will get better grades. Will alternate between situational writing as well as pic ones. -
E3:
Thanks for sharing. My dd was in the Tuesday class in term1 but she switched to the Thursday class in term2 because she has other activity on Tuesday. That's why I can tell it is different teachers for Tue and Thu.
Yes, super long absence...haha! My girl looks forward to the class every Tue morning. She's pretty excited about the performance this Friday. She did her poster on the Haiku and brought to school today. In my opinion, though the course has come to an end, nothing much has changed in her. She is still a serious, self-conscious girl, not a drama queen. She will act out her role rather professionally but behind the scene, she's back to her usual self. I guess it's personality. It's good exposure though and she had learnt quite a bit on the science concepts that were integrated.blurqueen:
I'm not really sure if it's boring but I think this week is the last stretch for them. They're practicing on both Tue n Thu until performance on Fri.
My son is on Tue and he enjoys it fair enough but not really sooo in love with it. Almost like moving with the motion since it's school activity. Do you think they carry different materials for it? I would assume it's the same group of people coming to teach both Tue n Thu.
Back from super long absence
sharon1234, I am just sharing, hope you are able to elicit more response from parents whose kids go for Thur class. -

I guess that could be the reason as well.

Hi E3,
Reading helps, but don’t know why my son doesn’t like to read.
Neighbour told me at P5, Eng Paper I has 2 compo to be written - situational AND picture within 50 minutes. :!: I’m at my wit’s end getting him to pick up a book. -
janet_lee88:
I just want to clarify for the P5 EL paper 1. Part 1 is the Situational Writing which carries lesser marks (15m) and the student is supposed to derive info from a given text, then rewrite in another form, such as letter, invitation, email, report etc. Part 2 is to choose either Picture Composition or Situational Composition in which the student is supposed to write a story of about 150 words. It carries a higher weightage (40m). However, I am not sure whether the time to complete both parts is 50 mins. If I am not wrong, it is supposed to be 1 hour 10 mins for PSLE, unless there is a change this year.Hi E3,

One way I did to encourage my girls to read is that I also read. We visit the National Lib quite often to borrow books. -
Hi E3,
I'm worried enough for son's SA2 this year. When neighbour told me have to write 2 compos at P5, I was like :!: :!: ???
Anyway, I'll be getting him to practice more on picture compo since there will be a chance he can stay on track instead of situational. Knowing my son, he can write all the way to the moon if not given a direction.
One more thing, Chinese tutor just told me. There will be higher emphasis on ORAL for this year's P4 and reduction of emphasis on 作文. I think it's 40 or 50%. :?: :?: -
janet_lee88:
I think you don't have to worry too much. Your son was picked for Chinese Story-telling, m sure he will be fine. Try to converse more in Mandarin with him. Nearer the oral exam, it will be easier to run through/revise Oral practice scenarios if he is already conversant in Mandarin. Take it easy.Hi E3,

Hi E3,
My son chickened out because he has stage fright.
For his oral/compo, I’ve outsourced to the tutor…can’t cope. I attend to his daily work and revise what I’m capable to do so. As for his Eng/Chinese compo from school, we will go through the pictures and then get him to plan.
Converse in Mandarin ? For a short while, I can still do so but not that much. Honestly, I really salute you, the way you coach your daughter. I just cant do it. -

When my elder boy was in P5, the very first EL home assignment on the 1st day of sch was compo writing. Subsequently, almost every week had compo practice using one of the thick stack of EL additional materials purchased along side the booklist. The pupils would hv sufficient practice to think fast on their feet in order to complete the exam paper within whatever time limits. -
IJJ:
All the best for the kids taking Science Practical test today!

I asked my boy abt the practical test, so different from what I thought it would be. But he enjoyed it.
I would try to list the activities here so that future P3 parents get to know what to expect when their child's turn comes.
Contents include 4 activities.
1) An incomplete diagram of a fish. The pupil to draw 2 parts (scales and a short tail) as required in the test qn. I asked my boy whether the qn says to label the parts drawn, he said not. Not too sure if he's right.
2) Given 5 types of fruits to test which ones float, which ones sink. First guess the outcomes, then do actual testing, then record findings.
3) Given a peanut, record the texture.
4) Given some objects, to sort them into types for recycling.
The above are what my boy told me. Pls feel free to add on if he has missed out some details or he's not accurate in his details
