people don't realise that when the schools say 'sports' or 'art' talent' ...... they are referring to national champion,

Actually this statement mostly applies to RI only. 😉 Other schools consider under CCA. Ok, RI does consider sports under CCA domain, but definitely not music or dance or art.

Why don’t you call NYGH and ask them? They’re very friendly. Better to find out once and for all from the horses mouth than to speculate.

it is also a fallacy that some parents have in applying for RI via DSA :

they think that there are so many math olympiad title holders applying and therefore the competition must be very very keen. (which is true, and the math domain test is very demanding).

therefore they choose to apply under science domain - hearsay from previous years very easy … just do experiment … but … but …after getting through the GAT and the time come for the selection test, stumbled at the written questions section

same for mother tongue domain. some "schemed" to apply under MT thinking there will be less competition … but again the questions are very demanding, out of the world, and the kids really "sweat" and came out demoralised

parents, draw your own conclusion, if you have sons eyeing on RI in next year’s DSA

RI’s selection benchmark is NOT to fill a quota, therefore there is no advantage if there is no excellency in whatever subject the kids apply under

            may be

but look at NYGH and HCI - they take in those at the very top, if not national champ, may be runners up are ok

there is a huge crowd below the top few

ACS(I) has 2 streams - express & IB. Flexibility to move the students from IB to express due to unsatisfactory results is simpler. Also at year 4, students from express can transfer to IB again based on their results. So the system works better.

Other IP schools have just 1 stream. The resources - teachers involved, materials, time, etc - needed to prepare the non-performing IP students for 'O' levels will be heavy. The students will not benefit as the school won't prepare them as well for 'O' levels compared to other non-IP schools, and the schools also have to set aside resources from the IP stream to help this small number of students. It is tough for these students to excel in 'O' levels given the environment and the stigma.

As parents, we should bear all this in mind when choosing schools.

BTW, has any mainstreamer heard from RGS or NYGS or DHS on their application via academic or sports?
This topic was raised during the HCI Open House talk and the school's position is that once they've taken a student into the school, they are committed to the student all the way. They've found that some students may not be able to cope with IP and therefore, there is one small O levels class (about 20 students) from Sec 3, with their best teachers assigned to it. The students can go back to the IP track if they've shown improvements.

I heard that RI does not have an O levels option.

                  Hi Jtoh,

Ya, thanks for advice. I had just call NGHS, they said they are not able to call all the DSA applicant for interview…Only randomly. But what I mean is they should have base on some criteria to select for the DSA applicant to interview right?

Not sure if this is helpful and relevant to you.

                    Phase 1
Good GEPers not required to do GAT but proceeded straight to interview \"heard was done over a tea reception. 😄

Some GEPers were called for interview, successful ones had been informed. 😉

                    Phase 2
Mainstreamers via CCA were called for auditions and GAT. (NO INTERVIEW, but pending status)
                    😢

Mainstreamers via academy were called for interview based GAT.
Shortlisted ones have been called for interview, this week! :celebrate:
