On the other hand, the probability of a successful ballot is pretty high, about ~80% for GRPS and ~70% for Beacon? Sigh....dunno what to do...one more hour to go....

a lot of people measure probability in this way : no. of vancancy/no. of applicants. While it is not truely wrong, the actual prob of being chosen is quite different in another way of calculation.

assuming 100 people go for 50 places, and assuming a one-person-one vote system to simplify my illustration.

As there is only one ticket with your child's name, the prob of your child be the chosen one is actually 1/100 which equals to 1%

In the 2nd round, the prob of your child being chosen will be 1/99 as only 99 tickets are left in the fishbowl

This will continue for 50 times, so when it comes to the 50th round, and if this time your child is not being selected, the prob of your child being chosen will be 1/51 (by then only 51 tickets are left) , which is about 2%

so there are 50 rounds of balloting for your child to be chosen in the scenario above, which each round presents a prob of 1-2%

I registered at GRPS. I called at about 4pm. They told me have already exceeded about 40 places, so probably at 170 for 129 places.

Definitely gg to watch the lucky draw next fri. So stress, cannot imagine, neighbourhood school needs balloting too.
