Hi, the price should be around $4.50 or less for lower version if there is no much change after several years.
(The price label in 6a and 9b were the same at $4.50). Hope this information help. :lol:

oh, is it? how much does the whole set cost roughly? guess still much cheaper than tuition course which is about $50 per session.

I bought the entire set, i.e. 36 books, from Popular @20% discount + 2% rebate from my Standard Chartered debit card, i.e. $3.78 per book.

However, my friend bought it through Singapore Motherhood forum for around the same price. No need to wait for Popular 20% sales and not all branches have the complete set.

Hi gerberdaisy, when I first saw the books, I thought the illustrations looked archaic and wondered if 21st century children will like it.

However, as I have went through the literature on the background and methodology of the P&J series at the Ladybird website, as well as read the many wonderful reviews by parents, I bought the whole set immediately. On hindsight, I would encourage parents to buy a few at a time.

We started the books in Dec last year and my daughter loves it. Of course, there were hiccups now and then but we managed to overcome them. Now the books have become part of her daily routine. She speaks not a word of English when she started N1 last year. Through P&J, as well as her teachers and classmates in school, she's speaking English fluently and her grammar is improving.

I think in any attempt to teach our children, our (ie parents') attitude is of utmost importance. If we find the books boring, and display it to our children, they will most definitely feel it and think likewise. When I first presented Book 1a to my daughter, I did it happily, though I was a tad worried. I told her I have gotten her new friends, Peter and Jane, and they will share their lives with her through the books. Though the content was simple, I pointed out the various interesting details in the illustrations. In other words, we can enhance the content beyond the few simple words.

Also, should the children show resistance to the books, the reason may lie in the delivery of our teaching methods and not the books.

Gradually, as the level progresses, the content gets richer too. Personally I found myself getting into Maths, Science, Geography etc.

Yes, gerberadaisy, agreed with you. I find them very boring initial. But i still give it a try by borrowing 1a-2c from the Yishun library (http://www.nlb.gov.sg) . I may not be convincing, (however Tamarind convinced me :celebrate: ), u can give it a try.

On the 1st few books, I make some funny sounds (splashing... etc) while we are reading, and he will do the action to me. As what Tamarind blog's mentioned, so long the child can manage to read 50% of the book, u can skip to the next book, as they keeps repeating. For my situation, he had never repeated any book. And for your information, he dun speak well in english, and neither do my family. We speak chinese at home.

For phonic, mine did went for zoo phonic for a term and I withdrew him and place him in school (cheaper). I follow Tamarind's instruction to let him see the leap frog series too. (Haha, looks like I'm Tamarind's follower)

But after you see a child improving, u will find wonders on this series. The fastest result u can see and that wat we parents want. My hubby agreed that P&J are good books too.

My advise is do not read the Peter and Jane books to your kids. Peter and Jane books are designed for children to read out loud. These books are effective only if the child reads every word out loud.

If you read book 1a many times to your kids, they may be so turned off they will never want to read these books.

I usually advise parents to make sure that their kids know all the phonics sounds, and are able to read 3 letter words before starting on the Peter and Jane books.

Yes, of course, it is very useful to a lazy and confuse mum like me :lol: . I still hv not try out other english books, no time too. You have a very resourceful blog, but too much to absorb :P, I will let my son to try those recommended once he finished reading the p&j.

I'm waiting for my friend to pass me the si wu quai du books and start him in Chinese. As for the the 500 shi zi, I find it too simple for him, so I didn't buy that.

Just to share with you.

My DD1's attn span is very short thus to most parents and teachers, she is considered a slow learner (not picking up thgs fast enough). However from K1 to K2, we noticed a leap in her learning progress.

She started astounding us with some big words :shock: (she had problems pronouncing even simple words previously). We are not sure if it was b'cos of few months of zoophonics or due to her teacher in childcare. Although we will not say she's doing very well but she was progressing well.

We switched her to ICR and the results was not promising in the beginning too (started regretting the switch). However with few mths of persistance with the ICR class and our continuous encouragement, she started doing pretty well. We have also realised what makes her tick (constant encouragement).

I guess it's different with every child. But as parents, we need to spend time with our child in order to find out.
