2010 DSA(Direct School Admission)
-
My son is a GEP student. As far as I know, none of his male GEP classmates or friends from other GEP centres has been made offers by any of the IP schools. However, all his female classmates have been offered places in NYGH &/or RGS.
Anyway, both RI and HCI indicated on their websites that applicants will be informed of the outcome of their applications by end August. Meanwhile, I told my son to concentrate on his PSLE revision  -

Thanks for sharing with our anxiety. Actually this is what we wanted to know......whether the sch got reply? Be it GEP or Non-GEPers.... -

Hi Snowz,snowz:
But is it true that only GEP students have a higher chance of getting into those IP schools?

I don't think so. My dd's friend (mainstream) got CO from 2 IP schools, pending another one from NUSH. Actually RGS is still calling mainstream applicants after the selection test for interview next week, although RGS has already offered CO to some last week.
Thanks for the info. But is is true that RI never calls any non-GEP student for interview even if he clears both the GAT and the Half-day Selection Test? Please clarify. Thank you very much.
Hi Kiasu Friend,
According to RI's published DSA process, non-GEP students are not required to attend interviews. This is public information. -
MumSAH:
I understand the anxiety...BTW, HCI stated they will release the results for all candidates of both DSAs at the same time by 20 August...that's just 2 weeks away

You can't compare the SA1 results of GEPers and non-GEPers. The GEPers sit for a common paper across 9 GEP schools, their papers are different from the mainstream SA1 papers of their school.ssll:
So by the time it reaches non-GEP student, no place for them. Maybe those IP schools should let us know for non-GEP student, how many places are allocated to them.

not a very fair system after all, i'm sure there are non GEP's whose SA1 results are better than GEP's
There's nothing fair or unfair about the whole system; The GEPers have been on a different program than the mainstream since P4. In short, though I may offend others here, they've learnt beyond textbook knowledge.
From the MOE website:
Goals of the GEP
The aim of the GEP is to develop intellectual rigour, humane values and creativity in gifted youths to prepare them for responsible leadership and service to country and society.
The goals of the GEP are as follows:
■to develop intellectual depth and higher level thinking
■to nurture productive creativity
■to develop attitudes for self-directed lifelong learning
■to enhance aspirations for individual excellence and fulfilment
■to develop a strong social conscience and commitment to serve society and nation
■to develop moral values and qualities for responsible leadership
Whether our kids are GEP or non GEP is not main crux to determine their worth as study is not about competition but hopefully they learn and grow up to be responsible adult.
We hope the best for ur kids but there is bound to be disappointment ......
PSLE is only a part of their life journey and in working life, the person who progress high may not necessary be the smartest but the networker. :stupid:
Let's hope our kids will all do to their best ability and score well -

therefore if an applicant goes under the basis of academic excellence, he only needs to prove himself through the selection test set by the school. interview here is irrelevant
I beg to differ on one point. In my view, an interview cannot be considered as mere salesmanship. I think the IP schools have a higher purpose in calling DSA applicants for interview. Because the IP Schools also know that good salesmanship does not equate to academic ability. So I am unable to agree that the students attending a DSA Interview (whether GEP or non-GEP) are merely trying to sell themselves. I think the IP Schools will not let them do so, even if the students attending the Interview try to.verykiasu2010:
what so important about the interview ?
good salesmanship does not equate to academic ability
for non-GEP applicants, why fret for the lack of interview ? If you are good, it shows on your selection test and get the offer. straight and simple. no need to try to sell yourself
for non-GEP applicants, you got 2 chances : once at DSA - prove yourself at the selection test; and another chance using the PSLE t-score
as for interview for GEPer, you should know that their promotion to Sec 1 is not merely based on academic performance, hence the need to talk to the candidate
for non-GEP candidate, the clamour for interview if isn't trying to convince the admission panel why they should consider your candidacy, then what for ? if the application for admission is based on academic, then it is the same as PSLE t-score, purely based on academic merit. No interview ever conducted for S1 posting candidate, right ?
hence, it is also not wrong that we hear of NYGH sending out confirmed offers without interviews.
in my discussion with HCI admission people, they also said the interview is just for observation and chit-chat, it is not like a job interview, nothing to be concerned. the main criteria is still academic
hence the RI practice of not interviewing non-GEP applicant is not unusual. they are just upfront about it without beating around the bush
we agree to disagree -

very true , this is just a small hurdle , many more hurdles in life , so do no take it too hard even DSA fails .I totally agree with mamatay.
Lets not lose sight that these are children who has hopes and dreams. The best that we can do is to love, support and facilitate their efforts.
To me, GEPer or not, they are our most precious assets whom we need to nurture, pass down the right values and bring out the best in them.
One disappointment does not mean that they are done for life.
This is just but one of the challenges they will face in this life. -
It is quite sad that a lot of people misunderstood GEPers and their parents, there are many GEPers and their parents who are very humble in nature. Of course there are the snobblish ones around, there are so many types of kids and parents. So, please don't generalize and jump into conclusion too fast.
Of course we are proud of our kids, but whether they are GEPers or not do not matter. As long as they try their best, be kind and compassionate to the unfortunate, that is good enough for me. I have 1 non-GEP girl, too. I am proud of her when she tried her best and scored 25 points above her pre-lim exams. Not only that. when she did well in arts or anything else, I am also proud of her.
Yes, this is just 1 exam/DSA, there are so many obstacles in life, 1 failure or 1 success does not mean too much. Our kids still have a long way to go! Our unconditional supports means so much to our kids.

Agree with fruitplus that we should be proud of our kids as long as they have put in their best. My DH has always been telling our 2 kids, 'You don't have to be the best, just do your personal best. If you have done your personal best, you will have no regrets.' (sounds like William Hung, anyone remember him?
)
PSLE is coming soon and I think the best thing to do is to put this DSA thing aside and provide emotional support our kids in helping them to focus on the upcoming national exams. It is the first time that our kids are facing this. Now is the best time to show our unconditional acceptance to our beloved 12-year-olds. :grphug:
Let's cheer them on to do their best. :rahrah: -
