Foreign language for children - which would you choose?

For me, Japanese. I like their culture and like to listen to Japanese songs. Learnt basic Japanese many donkey years ago but forgotten all liao.


However, as we're in the SEA region, Malay wld be useful, to at least understand and communicate with our \"neighbours\".

I chose spanish. I heard that it is easy to learn

I would choose spanish too, once you master the language it is easier to pick up french and italian too.

i would choose jap and french. jap becos my dh knows basic jap since he went for 9 month long lessons. french becos i learnt basic french in uni n stil thinks its one of the coolest lang around (and still remembers how to read french words). also, my dd seem to love her ballet classes n my fren who used to dance said ballet is a natural starting point for learning french. :love:

Hey parents, need some advice here.


I'd like my 6 yr old daughter to learn a foreign language and I have decided on either French, which is one of the sought after and useful languages in the world OR German which she only can order beers and sausages during Oktoberfest when she turns 18 (sorry I really couldn't think of its \"usefulness\" at this point of time).

The thing is I speak some German myself and she could have someone to converse with (acts as a moral support) and practice even when she's not in class (I can brush up my German too heh).

But if it's French, I'm concern that she might face difficulties.

I dunno, maybe this is MY concern and misconception about French language :lol: I used to think German was a difficult language to master cos at times it could sound like you're dispelling the phlegm from your throat (no offense Germans!) but after learning, I thought it's even easier than Spanish!

I know neither french nor german.


If I were in your situation (ie can speak some german), I would pick German for my girl so that both can have another language to communicate. But the most important is still my girl’s decision.

German technical education is quite good


Most of German graduates can also speak english but not French graduates

IMO, French is no longer a \"sought after\" in the world. If u are living in Europe, German is a more common and useful language. It's also easier to master as compared to French.

Yes, agree. Very strong in Engineering related subjects (think of their cars, eletrical appliances, R&D).
