All About Preparing For Primary One

I am really stressed with my girl going into P1 next year. She has the gift of the gab and a very sharp mind but the movement of a giant tortoise not even a baby one and super stubborn. She doesn't want to read and spell properly and she takes her own sweet time to do things. Be it bathing, writing or eating, I always have to give her a timeline. As I def can't be with her in school, I am really worried about how she will cope amongst her peers at this rate she is going. She really likes to procrastinate. Really want to bang my head on the wall. :frustrated:
Ever since I found out I was pregnant this year, I started teaching her how to write, spell and read more as I know I won't have much time with her when the baby is born. On top of that, I also have a 16 month old to take care of. She is ok with writing and spelling both her English and Chinese names but up till now when it comes to reading and spelling, she tends to memorise the words instead of concentrating on the sounds of the letters that make up the word and she guesses at times as well. I am really at my wit's end as I know I won't have much time with her as I would like once I deliver next month. And P1 is like 5 months away. I really dunno what to do short of sending her for classes but that costs a bomb. And if she can't read, she can't do any Maths questions either or read instructions. Any suggestions? TIA! -

I got my gal to start reading her books brought back from school but she hates reading...her teacher advised me to ask her to tell me what the story is all about instead of pressuring her to read.
Honestly, I am laid back with daughter since my older boy is in P4 and have to focus more on him. Other than that, I get some K2 assessment books to revise what has been taught in school. Have you considered sending her to RC classes ? Can't afford to send mine to enrichment centres but RC is affordable.
With a 3rd child arriving, have you found any help to cope with 3 ? Do consider that or you'll be very stressed. Take care. -
Will ChongFu teache Higher Chinese Language in P1?

Hi Mummies,
My daughter was given both Chinese and English homework today.
For English, the worksheet is on preposition…no problem for that. But for Chinese, it was rearranging of sentence. :!: My daughter could only recognize 妈妈 and 洗. Other than that, she doesn’t know the rest, let alone rearranging to form a sentence. Oh yes, next Tuesday’s 听写 is 上衣, 长裤,纽扣 袖子. Any mummies here encounter such characters for K2 ? -

Shouldn't kindy teacher teach all the words in the sentence before asking the kids to rearange?Hi Mummies,

My dd's kindy tingxie - mostly seafood, fruits, animals.Oh yes, next Tuesday's 听写 is 上衣, 长裤,纽扣 袖子. Any mummies here encounter such characters for K2 ?
Teacher would make them write a page in class. Reinforce at home, write another page as homework. Hence, usually no need to learn again when tingxie since already wrote 2 pages.
Your dd's kindy use a different approach? -
RRMummy:
we too tankee.. :D[/quote]You can try printing out the name in large font, laminate it, then get the kids to practice writing over it with marker first.
oh dear ! :shock:tankee:

i lack this foresight and chose to give my ds2 a name that has so many strokes.. :stupid:
My DS's name is easy to write, we planned ahead fearing that he would be punished to write his name 100 times by some teacher some day.

Hi sleepy,
I don’t know what approach the school is using…all I know is the approach is not in line with P1 now. Sentence rearrangement for Chinese is rather tough at K2 level. As for 听写, I will just teach her to write the easier ones…maybe one page for each one. The impt thing now is to 认字. -

The 听写 is no easy for word like 裤,纽. I remember during dd times, there wasn't any spelling. Things really change so much. No wonder next year P1 parents started feeling the stress. -

I find it crazy :stupid: Now can her kindergarten teacher be giving such characters ? If it's characters like 写,跑,走,跳, it makes sense but 裤 is hardly used. Most if not all primary schools are gearing P1s towards an interesting method of learning.
