      Hi sunflower2005

Thanks for your sharing. I am really impressed with the progress of your girl in Maths.

Will try out your method to teach my son. So do you specifically teach her on number bond? How do you get her to remember it?

      Thanks

        Hifive.

I am using numbers in a flash to teach.

        1) I arrange the numbers in order from 1 to 10 then read it loudly ask her repeat it after me.
        2) sheffle the cards and ask her to put them in order.
        3) I arrange it in 1, __ ,3 ___, 5___ask her to fill in the missing numbers.

start from 1-10 and then 11-20...and so on.

Maybe will need a bit more patience for the journey. πŸ™‚

          Hi sunflower2005

Yes, really need patience while teaching.
So does your girl attend any enrichment classes ?
Actually I was thinking to teach whatever I can and then send him for abacus class next year. After reading your blog, think I can consider to KIV my plan and see how it goes.

          Thanks!

how to teach a child numbers from 11 onwards?

as the numbers increased, i find it hard for a child to count from 1 to 20 or even 30… after counting to 11 or 12, my boy seems to lost interest…

              Hifive,

So far my girl only have swimming lesson and arts class for one term.
all other subjects all teach at home by myself.

              sunset_dae
yes , Is challenging for the parents, important thing need a lot of pantience and love to them.
count and repeat to them ,never give up . one day them will learn.
sometimes maybe u will think that you have done it so much but them still never learn.
\"U need to kick it out this thinking\" think positively πŸ™‚
              enjoy u journey with them.

                autumnbronze:
                Dear buds,

Thank you for the tips on how to teach pre-sch maths above. They are v v useful.
Hello again love... you are very welcome.
I'm glad it is useful. I have soooo many more but
have so little time these days to update. Many parents
have been asking me to blog all my stuff but again my
answer is i really cannot find the time to do so.... yet. πŸ˜„

So my reply to similar requests is usually, check out my
                articles in KiasuParents.
                autumnbronze:
Also, I SO agree with you that this 7 days a week song is can get SO addictive. My DS is constantly singing - this song - and he NEVER fails to correct me if I get it wrong eg: \"There are seven days, there are seven days, there are seven days of the week.....\" He'll say \"no mummi, its in the week, not of\"
:rotflmao: Wuahahahaa! :rotflmao: Ya noe what i mean huh?
It CAN get addictive beyond your limits woh.. as for that error
you tend to make, just shows that your DS is paying attention
in school and you're not!

                πŸ˜‰

Just wanna take this opportunity to say....

Thanks to all parents who support my passion for learning
thru' play. For our young preschoolers who may not understand
what study is, learning thru' play is the ideal way of inculcating fun
and simple concepts to them... cos they do not know they are actually
studying or learning. My girls like to say, \"We like to do work with you,
Mummy...\" Being extremely passionate with Montessori methodology i
have found that it is so liberating to find more ideas to complement her
style and to date it has been a fulfilling journey. My girls are doing great
in school and teachers have been giving fantastic support & heartwarming
feedback. My time at home with them these past 8-9 years have been the
best decision i've ever made... despite my stressful living conditions.

Stay with the fun with children but space out that fun and always remember,
START EARLY. πŸ˜‰ I will share more once i settle down in my very first home
                very very soon.. :hugs:

All my love for you always, autumnbronze. :snuggles:

And hugs for the little handsome smartie pants. :hugs:

[Moderator's note: Topic selected for http://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/content/teach-math-home-introducing-1-10.]

                    http://i565.photobucket.com/albums/ss93/buds_kiasubucket/NumberRodsCards.jpg\">

In a Montessori classroom this is one simple material used
for introducing children to concept of 1 to 10. The material
is made from wood, alternately coloured with blue and red,
to determine each column as one unit... and as number goes
                    bigger, rods get longer.

The number cards are also in wood. Numbers printed in black ink.

For mummies trying to teach this concept with similar learning
material, you cud do it with vanguard paper or cardboard...
preferably papers which won't bend easily. If using normal
paper can laminate.. Likewise for the number cards.

                    http://www.postimage.org/image.php?v=aVjGg3S

Many teaching variations to teach early maths concepts
                    with this simple material.

                    >Intro quantity of 1 to 10.
( Counting from left to right & one unit at a time)

                    >Building stairs. From 1 to 10. - Least to most. Smallest to biggest.
                    >Learning to count in sequence from 1 to 10.
                    >Building stairs. From 10 to 1. Most to least. Biggest down to smallest.
                    >Learning to count backwards from 10 to 1.

                    >Matching quantity and written symbols, with number rods and cards.
                    Arranged at random.

                    >Visual aide for introduction to simple addition using two rods.
(For addition questions with the answers 10 and below)

If you have two sets of these, can work the number bonds with
your children. I'll go into that another time, ay..

                    Happy teaching!
                    Hey buds,
Guess you must be awfully busy with the shifting to your very first new home. I just shifted to my very 1st one! *Phew* Its was so grueling for me. That's why I've not been working much with my dd.

I wonder if you have time for my queries. I want to teach my 3yo dd maths. I tried on and off when i have time to count 1-3 with her using concrete objects. However it seems like she can only understand up to quantity 2. What is the frequency like to introduce 1-10? All at one go or break into 1-3 then progress to 1-4, 1-5 and so on? I feel that her tcher is not working much with her on maths and i'm anxious to want her to be able to count (desperately in fact haa!).
Reading your above post, I would like to use the Montessori method to teach so it means i need to start off with this concept? if yes, i do not quite understand how i can use vanguard sheet to replace as the wooden rods? because the vanguard sheet although hard is not as 3D as the wooden rods right? Thus how do i build stairs without them flying off the floor? Can i use mega blocks to do this but thats higher cost? Why must it be alternate red & blue color? Is there a book i can get so that i know how to conduct this concept step by step?
Also, do i have to make sandpaper numbers for tracing too? Or can i just print out the numbers (bold in black) and laminate it?

My apologies with my questions. Hope you are not fainting 😜 I can't say enough of THANK YOUs for all your advice and help rendered since i know you here =D

I have the whole set. It does not teach maths per said. More of a logical thinking set.

                        HI laughingcat,

Thanks for your feedback on the i-maths set. I read in your earlier posts that your son is attending MPM Maths. Would you say that the activities in i-maths are comparable? I would think that maths understanding is more than counting to the hundreds, addition and subtraction. There is also the understanding and exposure to geometry, measurement, data analysis, time and money etc. Does the i-maths set cover these areas as well?

                        Thanks!
