My gal is with CMA for the past 1+ year and she has progressed well. I agreed absolutely that parents need to put in the effort to coach the kid in order that the kid progress - it's the same with every other course or new things the kid learn. I am not expecting my gal to finish the whole course of CMA - I do not need her to be a \"human calculator\". What I want to inculcate in her is the basic maths foundation (+-*/), a sensitivity to numbers and some discipline cum responsibility to focus and get work done within the allocated time. Every now and then thru'out this 1+ year, there are times whereby I can let go and she will progress, and there are times whereby I will have to step in again and put in the \"encouragement\" and \"enforce\" the discipline. I am not saying that CMA / abacus will suit all kids, but if the parents have the right expectation, this course is one that can help in \"training\" the kid's brain in certain aspect.

This is purely my personal experience and opinion, but I hope it helps some parents to set the right expectations.

Although my gal juz joined CMA for the 1st mth but my intentions is identical to what you have said. You seem to read my mind. :shock:

The only difference is how long my gal & your gal has joined.

Great. I started my kids in CMA about 3 months ago. Usually how long does it take to complete the course?

Hope your boy is enjoying his classes. There is no fix end or completion of the course. There are 13 levels, level 13 is the lowest, level 1 highest. Beyond that still got duan wei su. I think to reach level 1 takes on average about 4 years. Can be longer or shorter depending on the child's progress. You can talk to your son's teacher to understand what the levels are about and how is it like.

Need some advice. My gal has been with CMA for 1 yr plus. She has difficulty with the friends, brothers and neighbours formulas. She remembers the wrong formula like + she gives the - formula and vice versa. She also gives invalid formula eg. +7 = +2 - 5 etc. This problem has resulted in many wrong solutions which has greatly affected her confidence and interest level. Pls advise how to help her overcome this problem.

Its very well said. I just want to share my experience here.

My ds started cma when he was 4yo because of his love for numbers as well as a kind of brain training and best of all, could do 4 math operation.

We left cma last dec after spending 2yrs there and completed level 1 of mental arithmetic n level 3 of abacus. We left cma cos i think at level 1 the digit involve is already very great, is abit unrealistic to be used in real life and he has a good grasp of the concept Moreover, my ds is entering P1, to continue meaning to cope with alot of cma homework, and i rather spend more time to work on problem sum solving/model drawing. Infact, my ds wanted to cont to do duan wei. He has never complaint about the amount work to be done,rather he looked forward to each change of books. His interest keep me going as well. i really :salute: him.

It has been more than half a year, i still get him to pract twice weekly of aural and mental arithmetic. He is making use of mental arithmetic in his p1 maths, could still give faster and accurate answer even for multiplication and division problem,thus cut down alot of homework time, now he is doing p2 math.

My ds is lucky to get understanding, patient and motivating teachers. Frankly, in my opinion, not all kids can take the training, they must have interest in numbers and self-motivation, since its quite dry and req alot of work to be done at home + parental support (very important) The amount of work is like cant see light at the end of the tunnel, doing continuous series of books. The higher grade you are, more books to be completed. I often see alot of kids giving up half way through. Im truly thankful for the skills he has acquired in cma (not advertising for them). No regret sending him there and til now, i still recommend friends to cma.

a fren's dd is in toa payoh branch, didnt hear her complain about any teachers there. The owner of Novena branch is the same as bishan branch. So far didnt have any feedback from novena side.
