Dear Joanne,
Why does she need to borrow money of 2 months just because she is returning home earlier than expected? Does she need the money to build her house or give her family or something?
Are you going to renew her contract and is she reliable that she will come back to work for you?
As for salary in advance, depending on your answers to the above.
For me, at the very most advance only ONE MONTH. And this is only after you are quite sure she will come back to work for you so that you can offset. No matter how much money you have, do not advance more than 1 month because human psychology. Even if she comes back and work for you without pay for 2 months, I think it is not good because she may not be motivated working off her debt.
For my maid when she went back on home leave and needed some money over there, I put into her account at most 2 weeks pay in advance so that when she comes back to work for me, it is not painful for her to work off the loan.

I have a problem with my maid and hopes some one can enlightening me on this issue.
I have a good maid who gets along well with my family. She is supposed to return home after two years contract in Mar 2011. But due to my family situation, I need her to go back this year instead of next year. She asked for salary advance of two months as I am asking her to return home earlier than expected.
She is a good worker and she has a sister in singapore. Do you think I should give her the salary advance? -

It seems like most of you have mistaken her message? Or issit I have mistaken it. Seems like it is Joanne herself who has family situation and requires the maid to shorten her contract. Not the maid.I have a problem with my maid and hopes some one can enlightening me on this issue.

However, having said that, no matter who is the one tat decides to shorten the contract.. Joanne, it is nvr advisable to give her salary advance.. Unless she is super gd.. u wan to give some 'bonus' i guess a small gesture of SGD100 is good enuff.
Can share more about your maid? Do you think it is possible for someone to take over her? -
Sorry. Have been very busy for the last few days.
The contract is due for renewal in Mar 2011. My helper is a good helper and both of us have the intention to renew the contract next year.
Due to my family situation, I would require her to use her home leave entitlement this Oct. According to the contract, she is entitled to 15 days of leave. I have informed her that I can only allow her to go back for 11 days and I will pay her the differences.
My helper has just brought a piece of land in Bintan and she has the intention to build her house on that land upon exiry of the contract. She told me according to her calculation, she will only have enough cash provided she continue working until Mar 2011. The main reason for her home leave apart from visiting her family is to bring home the money and arrange for the workers to start work on that land. Since I am the one who is requesting her to return home earlier, she wont not have enough cash for the workers in Oct. Hence she is requesting for an advance (2 mths).
I am aware that it is dangerous to loan her the advance but since I am the one requesting her to go back before Mar 11, it doesnt seem right for me to turn down her request. Now, I am worried about the consequences. -

Hi celtricia, well I am unsure if any one would be able to replace her if my helper decides to remain in her home land. I have never ask her this question before. She has mentioned so many times that she wants to continue working for me until my baby gal is all grown up.

No worries about it. So does tat means that you actually want her to come back to work for u again after her 11 days of homeleave? Wow! wldnt that b v complicated...
Well, since u mentioned abt her wanting to build a hse in bintan, it may seems tat once tat is completed, she may not come bak at all.. so u may seriously wish to consider n try to c if u can do w/o it..
Hope it helps.

Ya I was thinking of letting her used up her home leave this year and renew her contract in mar 11. I just want to bring forward her home leave as next year I will be shifting house in Mar. I would require her help to get settled in the new place.

She said she wants to come back work even if her new house is ready as her family needs her income. She wants to provide a good education to her son. -
Dear Joanne,
I boldly \"BET\" you on the following since I am speaking from my own experience with my maid who is with me for 3 years already and has already started building her house (not yet finished):
(1) I bet your maid will not be able to fully build her house even with your 2-months loan in advance.
(2) I bet your maid will definitely come back to work for you since she is both willing and also in need of money for a good goal - ie. build her house.
(3) Her home in Bintan very near Singapore right? Take ferry? Should not be too difficult to come back to work for you after her home leave?
(4) So although I can be quite sure that she will come back to work for you and she is a good maid, I still have this to recommend \"MAX ONE MONTH\" only! There is actually no obligation for you to loan her at all but to \"keep relationship\", max is 1 month. She can take it or leave it.
(5) Your maid being a good maid must know how to compromise as well. Either she start building this October or she defer further. Any chance you will allow her to go home next year?
(6) My own maid after working for 2 years got enough money to buy land , give money to her family, pay for daughter's study, medical costs, birth certs, and buy sand, bricks and wood, materials for her house...etc..etc but she could not start building even after 2 years working and saving all her pay because of all these expenses.
(7) In the 3rd year this July, she went home and get the workers to start building using the materials she has already purchased. At the end of 2 weeks home leave, she got the basic infrastructure up and roof covered but not yet cement all the walls, put in windows and doors etc! (need more money!!). By then I put 2 weeks of pay into her account and she came back to work for me.
She told me she still otang the 10 workers about one week of wages of which she negotiated she will pay them only 3 months after she came back to work. Did she ask me to loan her to pay workers off? No, she is a sensible maid. Did I volunteer to loan her to pay the workers off? No, although I am a kind-enough employer. Why leh? Because loan too much it will spoil the working relationship for both maid and employer.
Sorry for being long-winded but hope my sharing of information will help you to make your decision.

Dear Joanne,
Another suggestion for your consideration is to let her go home next year after renewing her contract and after you have shifted to new house and settled down. That way she is not going home too early, got enough money and you also get her help.
You can check with your maid whether this would be better?

Those are very sound advice from DesertWind. Wld definitely bear these in mind if I ever get into this kind of situation in futureโฆ Thanks DesertWind!!

We can always T/T the money back to her home town, right :?
Possible the employer just absorb the handling fee.
When she come back after her home leave, it will be safer to loan her advance $$.
Is not advisable to loan her money to bring back. Cos it happened to my sister's maid. Asked for advance $ for 2 mths loan and din come back.
F.Y.I, she also a good maid :x
