Hi Hi everyone, have some questions on Krisflyer miles that I hope parents here can enlighten me... (sorry if I sound suaku.. never redeem before..:P)

      - do the miles cover everything, or we still have to pay for services fee n taxes?

      - can I redeem miles for the adults, then buy tickets for the kids? (cheaper mah :P) I understand that redeeming online is at a discount, but how do I ensure that I can book tickets for the kids for the same flights?

      - I understand that the miles can be earned at various hotels too, has anyone done that? does that mean that u just show the card at the hotel, even if u did not fly on a star alliance carrier to get there?

Any tips on maximizing the miles earn? Thanks in advance!!

Service fees and taxes not covered. To be paid separately.

You can use to redeem either child / adult tickets - same mileage required though child ticket is about 2/3 or 3/4 adult ticket price. However, take note that if SIA has promotion, it is usually on adult ticket, and not child ticket (sometimes up to 50% off). Also, if you are buying child ticket separately, you cannot buy online (as child will need accompanying adult), so you need to get from SIA office. Tell them which flight youhave redeem for and get the child ticket for same flight. If you book early, should not have issue of no seat.

Hotel deals for mileage is usually possible only when you sign up as member for that chain of hotel. You cna then choose to earn hotel rewards points or convert those to airline mileage. You can check up on major hotel chains online to discover their programme (eg. Holiday Inn chain, Sheraton chain, Hilton chain, Hyatt chain, etc.......). So far, I've find it more worthwhile to keep as hotel rewards (esp. if you stayed with same chain most time), and use those rewards to change for free nights stay at the chain of hotel later. So, if accumulate enough, air ticket and hotel can be free

        Hope this helps.

          Hi Mrsbongz,

You can check out SIA's website:

          http://www.singaporeair.com/saa/en_UK/content/krisflyer/aboutkf/maximise.jsp

Tip #1: KrisFlyer also has co-branded credit cards with American Express in Singapore, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Malaysia, and Taiwan, allowing members to earn miles while shopping.

Tip#2: When it comes to travel, the two biggest expenses are airfare and hotel costs. The rewards credit card market for air miles and hotels is completely saturated with offers so choosing the best reward credit card can be difficult but the best strategy is this: Spend for the hotel program and apply for the air miles credit card offers when they present themselves. Consider the reasoning: A plane ride lasts for several hours where you sit in a tiny space and do virtually nothing. On the other hand, a hotel is a full 24 hours with a roof over your head, a comfortable bed, private bathroom and other great amenities that can't be obtained on a plane. At the same time, your average domestic flight and 3 days in a hotel are comparable in terms of cost. Therefore, if you are going to rack up mileage in a program, hotel programs will provide about the same cost savings and more.

          Enjoy your vacation 😄

recently SIA also offered 30% mileage discount on certain destinations

worthwhile to visit the SIA site now and then and subscribe for news and promos under your kirsflyer account

if u stay in hotels a lot then it is worthwhile to keep the points to redeem for free stay

Thankyou everyone… Have been travelling via budget airlines these past years… but now that DS1 is going primary school… I find that the difference in prices for budget and full svc is not that much… so thinking of using the hubby’s miles from his biz travel.

Will take note on the promotion details for airfares!! Did u guys know that star alliance carriers have super high taxes?!?! it’s alot more than what Cathay pacific is charging!!

SO far we have been keeping our points for hotels under their own reward system as they do not have black out or expiry dates… n we do then to spend more on hotels than transport. Guess I should talk to hubby about applying for some credit card with Krisflyer miles.

              Thanks eveyone!!

                  yes

you need to nominate your friend as you nominee first, then redeem accordingly

If I nominate a friend as my nominee, does he have the authority to get ticket for someone else?

have had the experience of flying CX over SQ during my trip to HK last year...bought the F&E package so got no choice but to stick to the airline. Heard abt the good comments on CX esp going to HK but didnt find them comparable with SQ...service was not great but passable...even saw how a stewardess serve an old lady her drink...carpet was abit wrinkled and is like abit old etc...

you are still in control of the account, not your nominee

there is a need to pay for the tax and surcharges too.........
