Cleared, but then on…are they struggling or enjoying their GEP course? I mean those who were trained since young… at TLL etc

Can only be proven if we can have a control test, ie. have the boy do the GEP tests without attending any classes. Since it's not possible, it remains questionable if the child was gifted by nature, just like those kids who attend GEP prep classes and managed to clear the rounds.

Btw, please don't be mistaken that I'm against sending kids to enrichment/training classes. I just feel that there's no need to be hostile to those who choose to send their kids for last minute prep classes.

Those who are not naturally gifted and somehow get into GEP through extensive training will suffer doing the GEP syllabus. My child was in GEP and from what I saw of her classmates, the ones who entered via

GEP prep courses struggled throughout their three years and were always bottom of the cohort. These were also the ones who weren’t offered DSA. And while they did well at the PSLE compared to mainstream students, they were still the bottom few among the GEP students. So really, what’s the point of struggling through 3 years of GEP, losing your self-confidence, and at the end of it not being offered DSA either.

Oh yes, to each his own. But just wondering about the kids, whether being 'artificially' trained to get in will spell trouble for them in future. Heard of cases whereby the children ended up in IMH. Real cases.

Erm, there are some who are naturally gifted but at the bottom because of poor attitude.

And there are also some who have gone through extensive training but doing rather fine because of good attitude.

According to the MOE Gifted branch, the answer is yes.

Even if they are tested \"gifted\", these kids are not exempted from the GEP screening tests.

The IQ tests are a different matter from the GEP screening tests.

In that case better to send these gifted kids to GEP prep course?
Since they are 'naturally gifted' but in case didn't pass GEP screening due to insufficient exposure to GEP style of questions... like that seem a bit 冤枉 not to make it through the screening?

I am NOT generalizing. I am referring specifically to the cases I know PERSONALLY. I wrote specifically \"the ones who entered via GEP prep courses struggled throughout their three years...\" I did not say all those who did poorly came in through prep classes.

I am not aware of any who went through extensive training who are doing well because of good attitude. Do you? And if they are doing well, how would anyone know if they were not already gifted to begin with and that the training merely enhanced their ability?

That depends on parents.

As far as I know, gifted may be in various areas, not necessarily in the area that GEP is looking for. You can check with the MOE Gifted Branch for more info. Even for a child who is allowed to skip levels, he/she is still required to take the GEP tests.

I know of a child whose parents are both doctor specialists. The child was always piled with countless assessment books and Maths Olympiad questions. Though he had always done well in school, he didn't manage to clear GEP round 2.

Another boy who had been attending brain training classes since young and started with TLL from K2, cleared both GEP rounds.

Perhaps the effectiveness of training depends on the areas and methods of training employed?

But of course, those who cleared the rounds without any such training should be naturally gifted.

MOE director of GEP Br explicitly said MOE does not encourage kids
to be trained to take GEP screening tests;
d intention is to sieve out those in dat ~ 1% with natural abilities.

MOE don't release past GEP screening tests so ppl can practice.
If parents create a demand, tuition centres will spring up to satisfy dat need.
U try to beat d system n get in, ur child will suffer if he/she can't cope.

Yes, I know of such cases personally.

Rereading my response to you, I realised there must be some miscommunication. I didn't imply that you said all those who did poorly came in through prep classes. Rather, it's a fact that the naturally gifted ones (ie. without attending any enrichment classes) could also perform badly because of poor attitudes towards study or simply because the topics covered are not their areas of interests. You are very fortunate that your kid is in a class with good studying attitudes.
