will the sec 1 batch this year be affected by this new ip system?
I think it will be effective with this batch since they have already planned the 7 IP School.
i do not want IP, i entered the school because it wasn't.
U can always leave after O-levels. Why the worry? haha!

Thanks to the KSP parents for answering my questions earlier, I finally saw the light.
So the thought of the 7 new IP schools is to pander to those who cannot get into the first-tier IP schools due to MT? So instead of reducing the MT weightage at PSLE which caused many to see red, now they give more children the opportunity to go into IP schools?
Is it like cannot \"afford\" LV, then buy Fendi? :?
Actually I am rather impressed with this solution as it can put a smile on every IP-ambitious parent and child . Cheers to our leaders.. :celebrate:
My understanding of the birth of IP schools was because it was statistically shown that a fraction of the children in a cohort who did well in PSLE certainly made it to the university. So based on this hypothesis, MOE wanted to improve the curriculum for such group of kids and use their time more effectively to learn more things in the same given time instead of preparing for 'O' levels. At that time, 'O' levels was not designed by us I believe there was no way to tweak the exam questions to make it more difficult for these bright sparks, unlike PSLE. But I thought now we have the rights to set \"O\"level questions locally? I stand corrected.
By having another 7 IP schools, does it mean that our tuition/enrichment culture has generated more of such children to warrant 7 more schools to accomodate the accelerated learning path? :?
If the supply of such children is real, then the 7 new IP schools make sense and it is really an eye-opener for me that our children in Singapore are really very progressive, overtaking systems faster than we realise.
Otherwise......I rest my case.

Why do you all want to speculate so much? Got offer, take lah!:rotflmao:

Maybe people worry about banana money effect?

I am rather neutral now and trying to understand the rationale of the thought process because reality has not hit me yet, just curious about the evolution of our education system.

The IP programme also requires students to do project and indenpendent study which are part of their promotion criteria. Therefore, the students need to be independent learners and many things are not taught in class but a lot of self reading outside classroom. Also they don't follow thru text books to learn all the topics systematically. Most would just touch on the few topics and spend most of their time on CCA or project meeting and preparation.
Very well said. Totally agree.powershengyang:
IP may not really ensure that the life of a student would be smooth sailing. Some students may \"slack off\" or do other stuff instead of studying during the \"O\" level period.
Does everyone know the real reason of IP in schools like RI, HCI etc? The reason is that the \"O\" levels are simply too easy for the students. Thus, the school bypasses the \"O\" levels but the test papers that replace this national test is actually even more difficult.Being in IP also does not gurantee you a place in the JC. In HCI, you need to score an average of B3 to be eligible for the HCJC in which failing to do so will result you being kicked out from HCI.
Many people may see IP as a means to enter a JC effortlessly but the real purpose of IP to drill harder questions into the students. The \"O\" level is a national exam and must be moderated so that the weaker students would not do too badly. IP is just there so that the better students can do harder questions and of course, it also comes with its conditions such as like i stated before, an average of B3 for HCI.
IP is not for students to relax during the \"O\" level period, it is for them to train themselves for harder tasks, thus please do not think IP ensures you a direct admission into JC.
You have to work hard for it -

i do not want IP, i entered the school because it wasn't.
Don't think it will be compulsory. It seems that you can still attend the school and choose to take 'o' level path.

It's true there is still cut-off point for IP and the kid need to meet the PSLE cut-off for IP in sec. However, if the kid did not meet the COP, he can still go to the affiliated sec and in sec 1-2, should he do well, he can still move to the IP arm of the affiliated sec. Having an affiliated sec, and having the opportunity to enter the affiliated sec IP either via PSLE / lower sec route itself is a huge bonus - that's what I see!
Pardon my ignorance... currently, can a student from a non-IP sec sch apply to join IP in a IP sec school, say in sec 2 or 3 (of course, provided the student has obtained significant achievement and something to substantiate the application)?
Well, I think these new IPs schools would offer both IP and non-IP classes. For example, if MOE says the COP for IP class is 250, then, those who score more than 250 (with or without affiliation) will be eligible for the IP class, while the rest (e.g. those > 220 but < 250) will be in the normal O level class. So, even if one get into primary sch with affiliation sch offering IP, there is no guarantee that the kid can move smoothly to IP program in sec.mommyNg:
Ya, if can get into primary sch with affiliated sec offering IP, it is then a bonus and kid can move smoothly to sec with possibility of joining IP after PSLE or sec 1 - 3. So for those IP sec with affiliated pri, the pri sch will become \"hot cakes\" for P1 registration. Property 1km around that area will become \"hot cakes\" too. Ya, parents should go grab those properties for the sake of your children and grand children......
The current batch of IP schools, say RI/RGS/HCI/NYGH would still command a higher value & demand, cos' besides the reputation, all the classes (at least in Sec 1, I think) are IP, and if I'm not wrong, only if one did really badly that one would be put into a normal O level class at a later time (perhaps 1-2 classes only)?? -
mommyNg:
Depends on the school.

You can take a look at the 3 different models of IP schools here:
