My ds usu only changes when it breaks. He uses a fairly costly set of strings. He practises everyday, wat. haha.phankao:

I was told the more a kid pract, more often to change the strings. Btw, how do u determine if the strings are required to change. My DS violin is a year old now, i can hear the sound is not as bright, not sure if its time to change strings.
Yea, if you find the sound quality of the strings has reduced, then do change. I used to do that too. Change everything - nice, nice. but now I don't bother - leave the boy to do himself. The only time he took everything out and changed everything was when his violin got wet in a downpour not too long ago - violin case was soaked thru by the time he made it from school->violin lesson->home. -

When we change the violin from 1/4 size to 1/2 size, was told that we can get a bottom range of 1/2 size violin but must change all the strings to the top-range or reasonable priced range of strings.
According to the teacher, the strings used will make a difference. -

Depending on your dd's standard? I don't see why it's not possible to just start preparing for grade 5 instead of grade 4 - but then this really requires your dd's teacher's support.
Doing grade 5 exam in Feb 2012 should be ok too, if she's all well prepared for it, since it's early in p6 year. Gr 5 not as scary as doing gr 8, yah? My daughter did her gr 5 theory exam in mar of p6 year, and her gr 5 practical in July of p6 year. But I absolutely refused to let my boy do his gr8 exam in his p6 year. Too risky. -

Gulp! We are planning for dd to take her G8 cello exam in early P6. Does the intensive academics preparation for PSLE start from the very beginning of P6?

Oh, if she's ready for Feb/Mar exam, then it's ok. My son was ready for Aug/Sep so we said to wait.

Hi Phankao
Can I ask you abt music theory? My DD has not taken any theory lesson, what would be yr recommendation? To start from Grade 1 or to start from Grade 3? can they self study and then take the test??
I dun know where to start and how to start??? DD’s music sch has theory lessons too but I am think is quite X. So I am wondering whether there are other options for them to learn theory.
Many thanks!!! -

I send to teacher, leh. Not cheap, but at least got guidance. I sent to a piano teacher. Of course must start from grade 1, but very fast lah, if they are already familiar. eg. my son did gr3 exam after taking lessons for 9mths, then the following year, did gr5 exam.Hi Phankao
