Pat's Schoolhouse

Crystalbelle08, I think none of the existing parents can tell whether school curriculum is sufficient to prepare kids for pri 1 or not. Only those parents with kids graduated, are able to share their experience. Personally, I find that pat's has provide a good learning programme for playgroup and generally, I do find kids over there are articulate and expressive.Hi DC mummy,
I may be enrolling for playgroup next year at Serangoon branch. Still cannot decide if i should remain in Mt Emily and move to Serangoon.
Anyway, I also cannot decide if i should let my kid stay in half day or full day program next year.
I figured 3pm extended program is not worth it as it will be spent on sleeping and snacks.
After 3pm will there be more of a enrichment activities?
Are these enrichment enough to bring them to primary one?
As in, Pats' kids still need to go for weekend enrichment?
Playgroup extended programme may be nothing much apart from stories, music & movement, cookery as academic learning (learn through play)mostly conduct in am. If I remember correctly, from nursery level onwards, extended programme will include both english & chinese speech and drama......
I think it is very common nowadays that parents expose their kids to other enrichment programmes. This is esp. true for those with 1-2 kids, even they are attending a good preschool....... -

hi shiyunu,
oops.. i did not ask if it was 7 kids in a class with 1 teacher or 2 teacher with 14 kids...probably need to clarify with her again..
but she did mention that only half will be on full-day next year... :stupid: still trapped in the half-day vs full-day thingy...
if it is not for the logistics, i would much prefer half-day...
DC_mummy,
u mentioned enrichment? do u mean that pat's curriculum is not good enough? what are their weakness? pls enlighten...
my initial plan was just to sign my kid up for nursery and let her play for the rest of the time (pm, weekends)... but i have really lost touch with the education system already.... is what i planned not enough? i.e. will my kid have problems in P1? -

There is only one full day PG class there if am not wrong. Recently, DS class has to moved to another classroom as they are using the PG first classroom of that row for the D'story club (half day programme). Heard from the teacher due to overwhelming response and request from other parents, they decided to start half day programme for younger ones at 2-3 years old. So far both english and chinese teachers are good, still remain the same without changes. I am not sure whether next year, will they still be the one taking charge of this class. Good sign is since the day DS joined, teachers in the school that I have seen, still about the same without changes....For nursery level, the class ratio may be slightly bigger, think it applies the same in any other preschool.
thanks so much for the sound out on the younger toddler's class IN serangoon branch. i got another girl born in 2009.. just called SH.. she told me yes, after the renovation, there are extra spaces.. but most earliest they can start is TERM 4 next year, gonna fill up FoRm A and B and submit in soon (yes, have not submit in :P).
Same, i am hoping that there is no change in his teachers, nor his classmates whom i think he likes them alot as well...argghh but his chinese teacher is going to give birth leh..
oh same, i like the team in serangoon.. most of them had stayed with the school for quite some time... and there are quite a number of senior teachers in that branch... my boy's class had a trainee teacher sitting in w his form teacher every friday... -

Hi debpch,hi crystalbelle,
yep, my kid is 08 born as well. so, if i sign her up for mt emily, they will be classmates.
sigh... i am a really worried parent... i wonder if 3 year old is a bit young to take school bus... what's more, we actually live in the north... so, my kid might be in for a really long ride...
how about your kid, are u going for full-day or half-day?
i visited the place already... so like u, i am concerned about the lack of \"classrooms\"... my husband likes it, saying that it is airy etc etc but i am concerned that my kid will be distracted...
talked to tanya and she said that the ratio is 1:7 and i think they will keep the numbers at that...
why are u transferring to serangoon? any problems with mt emily that you have not mentioned? from my fren's feedback, they say that upon changing centers, u have to deal with the whole separation anxiety thingy again... stressed...
My main concern with Mt Emily is the high student teacher ratio and the big classroom that houses all levels except toddlers
If tanya is keeping the student ratio to 1:7 for playgroup, that will resolve my issue and hopefully it will be maintained at that level.
Understand from shiyunu's post that there will be a new renovated classroom for playgroup.
This is good news!!! At least, my kid will not be distracted by the older classes. The partition they had in that big classroom is definately not sound proof, so it can be very distracting if she stay in the big classroom with all the big bro and sisters.
Did Tanya show u where the playgroup classroom is?
The renovation is completed. I did not see any extra classroom for playgroup, unless they decide to convert the music room to the playgroup's classroom.
From what i see, there is only 3 classroom now.
-The hugh classroom with many partion
-The music room
-Toddler's classroom
Or maybe there is a hidden room elsewhere.
Anyway, now that my issues are resolved, i will stay put at Mt Emily.
Happy for my kid, easier for me too.
I also dont wish to switch school unless i have no choice...too troublesome... -

Hi crystalbelle08,
Hi MLJ,MLJ:
Hi crystalbelle08,
So would you recommend the Mt Emily branch even though the teacher to kid ratio is not ideal? sorry to keep asking but I am now going to pull my kid from St James but now deciding between Pat's and Eton.
I am in a dilema myself.
Cannot decide if i should pull her out to go serangoon Pat's.
The kid ratio is one thing. The cramp classroom is also an issue.
My kid get distracted easily, i dunno if she will lost concenration when she move to playgroup next year where she is sharing the classroom with the rest of the bigger kids.
Its just mere partion at merely the shoulder level roughly.
Didnt really walk in to see, but from outside it seem low.
i strongly suggest u drop by and see and feel before deciding.
and preferly during lesson time so u can feel if u will get distracted by the other classes at the other side of the partition.
The renovation just completed last week, over the long weekend.
I hope they are improving in terms of layout and the partioning.
And please keep me posted of your feedback.
I need to reply the school by end of Sep if i am transferring out of Pat's Emily to Serangoon.
As I am an existing parent, very hard for me to pop by during the middle of their lesson to feel the noise level of the other classes.
your kid will be in what level?
Any level above toddler will be in the big sharing classroom.
Btw, St james is very hard to get in rite?
Why are u pulling out??
Eton quite ang mo also, so in terms of demographics, Mt Emily and Eton should be similiar.
Mt Emily has ang mos, japanese, koreans, indians(dont look like spore indians), china chinese, eurosians, and of coz, sporeans.
I did not go down, after hearing what you say about the low partitions,
I am not so keen. My DD gets distracted easily. We just came back
from France and the preschool there is quite Ang Mo kind, they let you have a lot of free and easy so I want her to get used to a slightly
more structure environment. She will get totally distracted if the partitions are not to the wall kind.
I am happy with St James, thankfully we could get in as my hubbie
knew someone working in the church. However, I really dislike
the admin or management, the teachers are great. But
the admin can make you vomit blood. The parking is very
confusing especially when they give you letters to explain certain
changes. And when my brother went in his company van to pick up
my girl, the staff treated him like he is invisible. I realise they look
at your status also.
But like I said, curriculum and teachers are great. So I am just shopping
around in case I change my mind.
My kid is 4, I don't know what class Pats schoolhouse has for her for that
age.
But thanks a lot for the feedback. I have another friend at Pat's-not Mt Emily branch and she only has good reviews about it so maybe you should try other branches. -
crystalbelle,
yep, tanya did show me to a new classroom but currently not in use… i am not sure when they will start using it but at the moment, it is used as a store-room (at least, it looks like that) - if I rem correctly, it is across from tanya’s office… -
how difficult is it to get into Pat’s at Buckley for toddler age 3 ?

No wonder i did not see the extra room.
Yes, it could be their storeroom.
That y i never consider that as a classroom.
Feel so relieve now that they get to have a place of their own for the playgroup.
So u confirming your place at Mt Emily?
Did Tanya tell u how many kids there are so far? -

I suggest, u go down and take a look and check with the principal.
I just understand that there is a room for the playgroup after all.
converted from a storeroom.
So maybe for yr kid who is 4 year, the nursery class, they can convert somewhere into a room also.
