2010 PSLE T-score

IsaacTham:
My kids used to have scores like yours. The T-score is around 270. However, be very careful with Chinese. The \"means\" have gone up over the years and will pull down the T-score if not done properly.hi! i'm from rosyth sch.
here r my prelim results: (not out yet but based on what i know)
EL: about 180-181/200
MA: 100/100
SC: 90.5/100 (the paper was very hard)
CL: my chinese teacher said i just missed A*, i think 180/200
how much do i get?
btw normally what is the standard deviation for PSLE? 20? 30? or more? and what is the average? about 50%? 60%?
also, how many A*s are given each year? it is by bell curve right? does it mean they give A* to top 10% and A to next top 15% and so on?
please minus 6 marks from my Chinese mark (upon 200) cos i messed up in LC yesterday... but after playing around with a T-score calculator program, i figured that would only lose me around 1.5 points.
Also, please help me calculate how many pts i would get for my targets for PSLE: EL 188 CL 182 MA 100 SC 97
Referring to an earlier poster who mentioned that he got 38 for Compo and full for Paper 2 in EL, how do you do it? i always only get 32-35 for Compo and 87-90 for EL. For compo is it description? Do you need to put in many good phrases? Or is it a good storyline? in any case, does a good storyline need to have a twist? Can a normal run-of-the-mill story (classic topics like robbery/cheating etc) get 18-19 for Content?
Anyone knows also how to get high in Chinese Compo? The highest I get is 31, but my teacher is one from China and China teachers tend to give lower marks. My P5 teacher gave me a highest of 34.
Thanks very much! -
the means for EL & CL are definitely higher than MA & SC
-
I think last year’s means for CL is highest (because of simplified format), followed by MA (though the paper is difficult), which is why some of the kids I know who did badly in either of the subjects gotten terrible T-score despites getting A* for other subjects. Before the CL format was simplified, I think MA’s mean usually was the highest.
However, the means for CL may drop this year because of the inclusion of sentence construction … (at the expense of average local students). I feel that the increase in marks for CL oral won’t help much for these local students.
The means for EL and SC should be quite consistent over the years because the standard of the papers have also been quite consistent. -
naggo-nitemare:
did the sch estimate the t-score using SD and mean ? is this estimated t-score close to using 'Total x 0.75' formula ?
my DS is from one of these 'top schs'. When the pre-lim T-scores were released, his cohort was advised tt those who scored 225 or more should hit 250 n above in the upcoming PSLE. Based on past data, this seems to be largely true for most pupils from his sch. -

I think total x 0.75 is not the formula. It is at best a guesstimate

if the poster \"naggo-nitemare\" for the \"225 and above\" is NYPS kid's parent, then they are using the actual formula from MOE, and threw in all the data from the NYPS P6 kids' prelim marks, they actually have two sets this year, one set for mainstream only, the other set is on the whole cohort mainstream plus GEP scores all computed together. they calculate the SD and the mean for each year's exam for each subject
from past years' records, NYPS kids actual PSLE performance are about 15 to 70 points higher than their prelim t-score calculated by the school
and the school tracks the kids' t-score from P5 SA1 onwards -
T score is how well you perform in relation to others. And sentence construction? Since when was there sentence construction in chinese? Unless you mean question 7-8 完成句子?

Sorry for not being clear. T score for Chinese will be affected by the change in the exam format. When the paper was simplified, the mean became very high - because both local and foreign students' score improved.
Before the simplification of the Chinese exam format, the 3 killer sections in Chinese paper 2 were : \"correction of wrong words\", \"constructing sentences with a given phrase\" and \"rearranging the sentences. My youngest kid was the worst in Chinese yet she did very well in PSLE, all because of the change in format with all the 3 sections removed.
Therefore, I was guessing that with the change in the format again this year, which I understand to be with the inclusion of \"constructing sentences with a given phrase\" (not sure if I got it right), the overall average marks (mean) may drop. This will help in the T-score of below average students because with lowering of the mean, their T-score will be reduced by a lesser amount as compared to a high mean score. -

Don't think there is \"constructing sentences with a given phrase\" in this year's CL PSLE format.snowman.697:

Yeah, me neither. But I think it will come out in the HCL Paper 2.

Do you think psle 2010 t scores will be high due to papers being easy? Will schools COPs increase then for sec 1 2011?
