      Dear maths guru

      Please help me on the following maths:

      2) At 9am John was cycling from Point A to Point B. At the same time, Mary was cycling from point B to point A using the same route as John. Cycliing at a speed of 4km/h faster than Mary, they would pass each other 300 meter away from the mid point.

      a) What time did they pass each other?
      b) If John took another 3 minutes to reach Point B, what time would Mary reach Poin A?

      Q2)
      a) Difference in distance travelled by John and Mary = 4km/h x T
      T = 0.3km x 2/(4km/hr) = 3/20 hrs = 9 mins
      Time they passed each other => 9.09am

      b) For a fixed distance
      Time ratio => John : Mary = 3 : 9 = 1 : 3
      If John takes 12 mins to travel from A to B; Mary will take 36 mins to travel from B to A.
      Mary reaches Pt A at 9.36am

      Hi Dharma,

      For the speed question stated above, for part (b), how do you get
      Time ratio --> John : Mary = 3 : 9 ?

      :?

        From the meeting place( place where John and Mary passed each other); John takes another 3 minutes to reach Point B [Given in part (b) of question]

        Mary takes 9 minutes to reach the meeting place from Point B [we worked this out in part (a)]

        For the same distance (meeting place to Point B or vice versa)
        Time ratio of John : Mary = 3 : 9 = 1 : 3

                Herbie:
                Hi! I hv one qn.

                4800 children registered to take part in a fitness test. 3/5 of the children were boxs. On the actual day of the fitness test, some boys did not turn up. Hence the % of the boys who actually took the test was 40% of the total no of children present tat day. At the end of the fitness test the no of girls who pasSed was 20% more than the no of boys who passed. 340 children the testHow many boys turned up for test
                Herbie:
                How many girls passed the test?

                Hi dharma. 340 failed the test
                Hi Herbie,
                While waiting for Dharma's reply,pls refer to DD2's working and pls don't laugh at her if she gets it wrong as she is only P5.
                πŸ˜‰

                Actual
                B: 1280
                G: 1920

                Passed test
                B: 100%
                G: 120%

                1280+1920-340=2860
                220% -> 2860
                120% -> 1560

                (a)Number of boys who turned up for test=1280
                (b)Number of girls who passed the test =1560

                VC's mum

                PS: Honestly speaking, it took me a while to understand DD2's workings and I have to edit 2 times for this post due to typing errors because of my carelessness in following her workings.

                    Hi dharma. 340 failed the test

                    Thanks Herbie.

                    Boys registered = 3/5 x 4800 = 2880 (60%)
                    Girls registered = 2/5 x 4800 = 1920 (40%)

                    % girls took test => 60%
                    60% => 1920
                    100% => 3200

                    No. of boys took test = 3200 – 1920 = 1280
                    No. of children who passed:
                    Boys : 5u
                    Girls : 6u

                    11u => 3200 – 340 = 2860
                    1u = 260

                    No. of girls who passed the test = 6u = 6 x 260 = 1560

                      Please help me with this question. It might be easy but my DS can dothe hard ones and the 3 marks questions he says he does not know :slapshead: :faint:

                      please help

                      Mr Samad made some toys to sell. He sold 20% of the toys on Monday. He sold 27 toys on Tuesday. On Wednesday he sold 10% of the remaining toys. After that he found out that the toys he had left was 1 more than 1/2 the number of toys he had made. How many toys did he make.

                      Thank you in advance!!!!

                        The number of toys made by Mr Samad was 115. But on working backwards, the number of toys sold on Wednesday is in decimals! Will leave this question for others to solve.

                        Thks.
