she has been with us for 1.5yrs and seems to mix around with quite ok maids. think she wanted to take up english lessons after seeing one of her maid friend complete her english cert. & was able to converse in fluent english.

        auntieM,

i'm still in the midst of discussing with hubby whether to increase her salary or pay for her course or just give variable bonus, or a mix & match so as not to tie ourself down with fixed costs every month.

she actually can cook quite well already cos hubby is fussy with food & has trained her to cook up to his standard. if she go for further training, i think she can go open restaurant le.

              Hi jollyme,

Honestly, I don't find it necessary to take up English nor cooking classes. To me, it's an excuse to get out of the house...your maid could be dropping hints for more perks.

My prev maids can understand Cantonese, Mandarin and English...I didn't have any freedom of speech at home then 😢
One of my maids went to HKG to work...thinking she can impress her employers with just one dish - CHICKEN RICE. I sent her home bcos she was plain lazy and loved to talk back.

We also very impressed with her - until when you try to find things or ask if something spoilt, she keep telling you dunno dunno.

Mine also read newspapers and hinted to me that new maids start with higher pay. I pretended not to hear. Actually these maids are all 'acting as pig to eat tiger' (ban zhu chi lao hu)

My household’s maid learns english herself. Sometimes i do help her a little bit, with pronunciation… apart from the problems i mentioned earlier, she’s a capable worker…

Am relieved to be finally getting rid of my Filipina maid after almost 4 years - she’s has been giving me lots of attitude this past year or so - but have tolerated cos both hubby and mum like her efficiency. Am getting an Indon (ex-Msian) maid soon.

Agent mentioned that we could provide a phone card for the maid to call home. Could anyone share how much to buy for the card and how frequent? Don’t want to spoil her … Also, do maids still write letters? Used to buy pre-paid overseas letters and stamps for my previous maids but my current maid has a handphone so didn’t need to do this for her.

                      TIA

Maids hardly write letters now. They prefer to talk either on handphone or use phone card. Don't make it a habit to provide phone card or the maid will take for granted. In the past, my maids doesn't use up the entire value at one go...so it does have longer 'shelf life'. I buy phone card for my maid on her birthday and Hari Raya. Phoenix phone card sells at $8 (usual price $10) at certain places.
