        This type is the most difficult. Let me try.

        Bob passed every subject except for Mathematics during the Mid-year examinations.

            I think it is also correct. The word \"for\" is intended to match the word \"only\" in the original sentence.

                      In my opinion, the correct answer should be \"was hoping\" which was not in the options. The best choice in this case is \"hoped\".

                      However, we use simple past tense for an instantaneous activity or event e.g. pick, take.... For activities that are continuous in nature such as \"hope\" I would think \"was hoping\" is more appropriate.
