DH is travelling to Canada next Wednesday to visit his aunt
His aunt whom he is very close to is terminally ill and now hooked up to machines, she had asked for him b4 she collasped last weekend. b4 the news break on sunday, i was telling him to \"GO GO GO,b4 its too late\" now I am saying 'do you really have to go?' Me very :scared:
Of course me not keen for him to go at this point of time, but he hasn't been able to get over his emotions and had decided this morning in the wee hours that he should go. I wanted to be selfish and say no, but if its me, I would take the risk too. So, ticket booked and confirmed.....
Today trying to get him to go for his flu shot and stand-by dose of Tamiflu or Relenza, most clinics are out of stock. Anyone knows of any clinic that may hv stock, other than the traveller's clinic @TTSH? -

Actually, most people do get over influenza, and even for this new strain, people do get over the worst of their symptoms in 3-5 days. And what most people do not understand is that quite a number of people have died after suffering from NORMAL flu and getting pneumonia as a consequence. Don't be overly worried about it. There are millions of people staying in Canada that are still pretty much swine-flu-free. -

Canada's situation is not like Mexico now. Don't mentally torture yourself too much. Try to live life as before but taking wise precautions and be more aware of hygiene which a lot of us have taken for granted before.
To have a peace of mind, get the seasonal flu shot not so much to protect against the new strain but it would help the clinician to exclude the seasonal flu should one present with flu symptoms. Bring along N95 masks for protection but it is terribly uncomfortable because it should be airtight if well-fitted and you would be breathing in recycled air within the little mask. If that is not available, then at least get some surgical masks with him and hand disinfectant. -
Thank you all for sharing my worries and help ease my mind a little.
Its not being in Canada that freaks me out. Its the time spend in the confined airplane and in the airport waiting for connection. You don't know who is sitting next to you and that person may have been exposed and not showing symptoms.
Am getting DH to get a flu shot b4 flying off, although the flu shot take 5 to 10 days to be effective. But its to rule out influenza should he ended up showing symptoms. Also concern that he has been in tropical climate too long and not enough time to climatize when he gets there, which is curently about averaging between 3 to 9 degrees.
Luckily DH is normally very much a clean freak, which for this time i m very thankful. -
I read in the papers that the normal surgical masks are not effective in blocking out flu virus to the wearer. It is more useful for preventing the virus from spreading from the wearer to other people. You can get 100 pieces of the normal surgical masks for less than $5 but each piece of N95 masks is almost $4. Furthermore, you are suppose to change a piece after every 8 hours, so it will be rather costly if you have to put on N95 masks for 2 weeks for every staffβ¦

I was at Guardian (Bishan) trying to look for hand sanitizers to use at home (my girl is having a serious cold, was looking for something to help keep germs at bay from the rest of the family). I think this might be an effect of the swine flu. I even tried Watson's and NTUC, but there was no stock to be seen.

And this is also a reason why so many people are buying the masks but NOT using them, even when they are having normal flu or cough. They are thinking that the masks should only be used when H1N1 hits Singapore. Thus, they continue to spread influenza, regardless of variety. It's downright stupid.
It's like car headlights. Many people think headlights are just for lighting your own road in the dark; and forget that headlights are also used to warn vehicles approaching you, of your presence.
My wife has flu and my DD has been coughing. My DD has been wearing her mask as much as possible when outside; she even brought one to school today. This is to prevent her germs from spreading.
The irony is it took me a while to find those masks. People have been buying them but these hoarders don't use them.
At Lot 1 Guardian last Thursday, as usual they told me no stock. A promoter there asked me if I needed help so jokingly told her, \"Only if you have masks!\" - when she found out that I wanted it for DD, she took out 3 of her own and gave them to me. Thank you - Ms Rebecca Lee of Lot 1 Guardian.
I finally found a pack at Unity, for my wife, btw - WAtsons, Guardian, no chance of any stock lah. -
None available in Toa payoh central - unity, guardian, watson yesterday.
