Hi Jemith,
I have this prob wif my child and hope to get some help.
He has armed wif lots of phrases etc.But when come to compo writing, he tends to rush, so in the end, timing mix up, sequence not in line, people mix up, expression also can be not appropriate at times....What should I do for such situation?thanks
Probably he is not very calm and just want to finish the compo.

For English it seems that the longer the better BUT my chinese teacher says that I should limit to only 2 pages (without leaving lines) as I can be too luo suo. e.g. For shocked, you can just write 'liu shen wuzhu' instead of five descriptive lines.
So I'm quite confused. Write long or write short? I usually write 3-4 pages without leaving lines. Does anyone have a rubric sheet? Or just some general pointers on the charactistics of a 36-40 compo?

2) Really examine the pictures and don't rush into writing. A lot of students rush into it without thinking through for fear of lack of time. Spending 3-5 minutes examining in detail at the beginning will actually help you manage your time better.

- 图画的中心思想 (What is the main storyline? What is the lesson learnt or message told by the pictures?) One thing you can ask yourself, if you were to give the compo a title, what would it be? If you can answer that well, then you would have grasped the storyline well.

- weather (sunshine, windy, stormy, hot day)
- emotions (happy, sad, angry, surprised, sick)
- actions (walking, running, searching)

Can these compo rubrics be used for younger kids? (P2-P4)[/quote]Hi Jasmine,
the compo rubric above is what the school uses for P5/6 compo marking. It would be more detailed and of course involve more components. For P2 - P4, the focus is more on certain components such as 内容充实, 切合题目, 语句通顺, 书写/标点符号正确, 结构严谨，段落分明. These components form the foundation of the their compo writing skills.
But for younger students, focus on questioning techniques - ask them what they understand from the pictures. They need to understand and verbally express the relationships between the pictures. Basic Questions can be,
1) What do you see in this picture? If they give simple answers, probe further to help them see the details?
2) What do you think happened between picture 1 and 2?
3) Why do you think this boy smiles in picture 3?
Again, if they can piece the story together, it's all about helping them to express. So you need to identify which is the specific area they are weaker in - expression or creating the story.

Hi Leanne,
the phrases will only be helpful if they know how to use it. It will be good if you can help to categorise the phrases for your child and ask him to construct simple sentences with it to assess how he/she uses it. I like to break down the phrase for them. For eg. 知易行难 - 知道怎么做很容易，但做时（行为）就难了. This way， they are not blindly remembering the 成语/短句。
If he tends to mix up sequences and timing, then he may not be understanding the flow of the story. E.g. if I see a blind man playing a keyboard in picture 1 and in picture 2, I see a man turning his head towards the blind man, then the blind man's music must be quite pleasing to the ears.
As for him rushing through the compo, just to have reassure him that there is enough time to write and he should plan his time. Get him to be time-conscious. 3-5 min to digest the picture and write down additional helping words of your own. 40 min to write. 5 min to check through your work. Sometimes I tell my students, just because you write 2 pages full of words, it doesn't mean that they are going to give you good marks. It's not meeting word quota, it's about telling a story.Leanne:

I am not sure if the parents have have seen the recent televised 华文谁怕谁. This is 相声 performed live on stage and one of the ones I feel is easier to understand. Hope your children can derive enjoyment and good humour from it! It takes a while to load so be patient!
