Oh! I forget the other:
Bala ______ the library when I got there.
(1) was leaving
(2) had left
(3) left
(4) has left
Thks for kind help.
meimeitan
Hi,
The answer is (2)
I got there. Past tense
Bala had left. Past Perfect (or I call it past past - the past of past tense)
I think (1) should also be ok.
However, the meaning will be different i.e. when \"I\" reached the office, I saw Bala leaving the library.
I got there. Past tense
Bala had left. Past Continuous -

Bala had left. Past Continuous
atutor2001 is correct. the answer should be \"was leaving\".
Past perfect is used when referring to certain event before a past moment.
Foe example,
Bala had left the library before I got there.
Bala had left the library by the time I got there.
Bala had already left when I got there.
When events/actions refer to a single moment like in this case, past continuous, \"was leaving\" is the appropriate choice.
Bala was leaving the library when I got there. -
Please help.

Q40) Should the answer be 'and' instead of 'but' as given in the worksheet.
The storm was not as bad as feared (40) _____ the people were glad that they had taken action in time.
But 'and' has been used for Q36.
Q59) Is 'the' acceptable? The worksheet answer is 'his'. -
I am often confused with the words \"alternate\" and \"alternative\" despite checking with the dictionary.
Maintenance is scheduled on every Wednesday of the month, with the following day (Thursday) as an alternate day.
Is the above correct?

Bala was leaving the library when I got there.
Yes , I agree with ifruit. I think that (2) can be used if the word \"already\" was put behind the word \"library\".

Hello P5G,Please help.

I will explain Q59) first. Regarding Q59), \"his\" is the most appropriate answer.
\"since the Graduation Day\"-whose graduation?
\"since his Graduation Day\"-since the young man's graduation
Therefore, the answer is \"his\"
Q40) Although I am not sure about it, i think the explanation is:
The people had taken action in time, but it turned out that the storm was not as bad as they thought it was.
Thus, the answer is \"B\"(but)
Hope this helps you!

Hi, need help on the following school work:
Synthesis/Transformation question:
Mr Lim said to me: \"No matter how unhappy you are, you will not get your way.\"
The answer sheet gave:
Mr Lim said ________________________________.
DD answer:
Mr Lim said that no matter how unhappy I were, I would not get my way.
Please advise whether is her answer correct?
Thank you. -
P5G:
It is correct but in your answer the \"did not expect\" part is filtered out. A picky teacher might nitpick...Q66 Ryan did not expect Leena to reply in that manner. He was shocked.
____ so _____ that _____
My answer: Ryan was so shocked that Leena replied in that manner.
Worksheet answer: Leena's reply was so unexpected that Ryan was shocked.
Is my answer acceptable?
TIA.
I'd change it to \"Ryan was so shocked that Leena replied in such an unexpected manner.\"
HTH.
