Hi everyone
Need help with this P5 question:
The total of 4 numbers was 390. When the first number was tripled, the second number halved, the third number increased by 28 and the 4th number decreased by 15, the 4 numbers became equal. Find the original value of each number.
Thanks in advance. -

After
1st number: u
2nd number: u
3rd number: u
4th number: u
Before
1st number: ⅓u
2nd number: 2u
3rd number: u-28
4th number: u+15
⅓u+2u+u-28+u+15=390
4⅓u-13=390
13u/3=403
u=403x3/13=93
1st number: ⅓u = 1/3x93=31
2nd number: 2u =2x93=186
3rd number: u-28 =93-28=65
4th number: u+15 =93+15=108
The original value of 1st number, 2nd number, 3rd number and 4th number is 31, 186, 65 and 108 respectively. -

Hi Vanilla Cake
Thanks for your explanation!
There is one more question:
Jenny and Lydia wanted to buy some souvenirs for their friends when they were on a holiday. They had a total amount of $625 with them. Jenny had $115 more than Lydia. At the souvenir shop, Lydia spent half of what Jenny spent. In the end, Lydia was left with 4 times as much money as Jenny. How much did Jenny spend?
Thanks again. -

After
Jenny: u
Lydia : 4u
Before
J+L=$625
J: [$255][$115]
L: [$255]
Jenny: $370
Lydia : $255
Spending by Lydia-> $255-4u
Spending by Jenny -> $370-u
Lydia spent half of what Jenny spent ->
2($255-4u)=$370-u
$510-8u=$370-u
7u=$140
u=$20
Spending by Jenny -> $370-u =$370-$20= $350
Amount of money spent by Jenny = $350 -

[] small number (1 box)
[][][][][][][] big number (7 boxes) ---> because big divided by small = 7 (quotient)
The difference between big and small numbers is 6 boxes or 6 []
Given in the question that the difference between big & small no. is 66, so
[][][][][][] = 66
[] = 66 divide by 6 = 11
So 7 [] = 7 x 11 = 77 (big number) -
