I would advise you to ask her how school is every day and make an effort to know the names of teachers and her classmates. When there are school trips, volunteer to help out. That way, you get to see the kids that she interacts with and also the teachers. Make sure that the teachers see that you are very involved!Hi Mummies,
Sorry to say this, but I've got a friend whose daughter is in IJ TP (upp primary). She advised me to teach my daughter to learn to differentiate those girls who are trouble-makers and those who aren't. That's tough bcos I'm not in school with her. The reason is as they grow, some of the girls can be rather bitchy. It was like :!: OMG, so young ?
Now, I'm rather worried if I have done the right thing by registering my daughter in CHIJ TP. -

I registered my daughter in CHIJ TP bcos of affiliation. I have no links to CHIJ St Nicholas. That is a SAP school, great if my gal can get in. In the meantime, I'm thinking of transferring her to another school with affiliation nearer home. This daughter of mine is rather stubborn and rather difficult to discipline. If she mixes with the wrong group, it will be tough to undo the damage.
If you are only looking at primary school, it is still not bad. But not the secondary section! If she gets into the good class, the students are generally quite \"guai\" at primary level. -

The primary school is still ok, since girls are younger and still controllable
I am a former IJ TP student, so know the happenings in the school but not now.
Will try to get more involved with her day-to-day next year, esp since son already in P5 and hopefully more mature in his thinking. Again, I'm praying hard he continues to stay level-headed.
Hubby & I were involved with son's excursions from P1. -

The kids are getting more mature at a younger age and sadly quite manipulative. Do be wary of bullies. As long as you have an open line of communication with her and tell her to let you know everything good and bad that happens in school and to her, it should be fine! Hi there! It may be too late for you but for the benefit of others out there, please let me tell you about CHIJ TP Sec. If you have another choice, please do not choose this school. The CHIJ TP Primary school is alright but the Sec school is extremely frightful. Let me elaborate:OngMum:

Teachers - Majority of them do not know what they are teaching. Case in point, there is a physics teacher - HOD of Physics who is quite clueless so most of the students will need to attend tuition to right the wrongs that she has imparted to the students. Quite a number of them are all talk but no action. There is a Chem and Add Maths teacher that are a cut above the rest - a rare find. The better teachers usually leave or get transferred out. I could go on but i am sure that you get the picture.
School environment - Not conducive. There was a case of vandalism where the students actually came back in the night to vandalise the statues and school property! Mind you this is an all girls school! Action taken - none just tell them not to do it again! In the real world, vandals, such as Michael Fay for example are caned and incarcerated!
The students can also be seen in toa payoh/orchard/libraries in their school uniform parading with their boyfriends!
Educational Standard - Low as majority of the students are those who could not make it to other Sec schools so they are fed into the school. If you are a high achiever, you will not be challenged in terms of curriculum and teachers!
Mission School - I seriously doubt the missionary/religious element here as it is a hotbed for favoritism, backstabbing amongst staff and students alike.

Just happent to read an article from a Scientist who thanks CHIJ. I believe every school have good and bad students even from top school. See recent news from ACJC and ACS.... Most important is how we teach our value to our kids esp when they are young and guide them not to be easily influenced by surrounding
If their value are not right, go to best school also will have other problem surface out, let alone if they go to society to work......
Catholic scientist thanks IJ upbringing
TheCatholicNews - NOVEMBER 08, 2009, Vol 59, No 23 SINGAPORE – A biologist says she is grateful to her Catholic education because it helps her in the largely atheist working environment.
Dr Pauline Tay, 35, a research fellow working in the Institute of Medical Biology in the Biopolis says, “It’s always a struggle because many scientists are not religious. But I will never see scientific truth as opposed to religious truth. My foundation also helps me to discern whether or not I’m doing the ethical thing.”
As a biologist, Dr Tay studies the development of cells as they grow. “The more you study something in science, the more you see the marvel of God’s creation,” she says.
In the course of describing her work, she marvels at how everything in a cell can work as a system. “Everything is so programmed and deliberate,” she says, explaining that when she tries to grow cells, the minutest detail, such as the acidity of the solution, can kill cells so easily.
But when Dr Tay is not working in a laboratory, her choice of entertainment and relaxation consists of watching musicals and plays. Isn’t it an unusual choice for a professional scientist? Not so when one considers her Catholic education.
Dr Tay studied in CHIJ Kellock Convent and subsequently at CHIJ Secondary School in Toa Payoh. She remembers her school days well. “Even though I was in the Science stream, we always had opportunities to explore artistic things,” she says.
During drama festivals, for example, students would act out the literature text that they were studying. There would be Chinese New Year decoration competitions and “my class would always win!” she laughs.
“Once, we organised a dance party to invite people from other schools, and we got hauled up for detention because we were trying to sell tickets,” she recalls. On hindsight, these activities helped her to learn skills that were not part of the academic curriculum.
“IJ prepared me for adulthood in terms of learning interpersonal skills which we’re not born with. I learned how to work in teams, and how to do marketing, for example,” she reflects.
Dr Tay is looking forward to Saturday, Nov 14, because the CHIJ schools in Singapore will be celebrating their 155th anniversary with an ArtsJam@IJ. It will be held at CHIJ Secondary (626 Lorong 1 Toa Payoh) from 10am to 4pm.
The event will showcase the myriad talents of former and current CHIJ girls through performances, art and photo exhibitions, hands-on workshops, food, gift stalls and guided school tours. -

I still feel proud when I read about former students who were from CHIJ Toa Payoh or Victoria St who are successful in life. This Dr Pauline Tay mentioned that her mother queued up at CHIJ Victoria St to register her and gave her the gift of education.
Every place has black sheep and as of this point, I am still teaching and trying to instill good values to my children. Hope they will stay on the right path and move on with the right values. -
