My ex neighbour's daughter was from CHIJ Pri..and she moved on to CHIJ Sec despite outstanding PSLE results as she loved to play handbells. She continued to do well for her 'O level' and got a place in VJ. She is very disciplined, confident and well behaved girl. Hence, there are definitely good and bad sheep. Though sch environment plays an important part in shaping the values and behaviors of the girls, their characters and family upbringing are also critical.

Having said that, I doubt I will send my girls to the secondary school after completing their PSLE, cos good sheep are rare.
I am glad that your ex neighbour's daughter has done well in terms of character and academic success! Yes i agree that there are some good students. But there could be more if more effort is put in by the teachers and school in terms of discipline, attitudes etc

I thnk nowadays society changes and so do our teenagers. Nowadays kids are too good life and it cannot be compared to our times...

As mentioned before, we as parents have to try our best to instill value to our kids. We cannot totally depend on school only (though I am still trying my best on this). So even elite school will have things happening.

I happened to see that there was a CHIJ TP girl in the top O-level student list last year. Hope to see more in the future šŸ™.

Nowadays teachers also have their own stress.... Every school do have dedicated and non-dedicated teachers. I think education system here are too stressing on result that value teaching may be neglected...

It really depend on individual student to buck up herself and we as parents to guide them too...In the world there is no perfect school, perfect teachers, kids or parents....
I understand and agree that parents play a vital role in bringing up their children. If they had done a good job instilling the right values when their kids are young, the kids will not be so easily swayed by peers later on. This responsibility cannot be delegated to anyone. Sadly, in this day and age, a lot of the actual nurturing is left to maids and caregivers. However i think that at ksp at least, the parents are super on! :celebrate:

My issue/concern is that the school has not been doing its \"role\" in educating the students. I hope to see a change for the benefit of the future generation of CHIJ TP girls and parents.

Quintessential Mum, is your DD in this school then? If yes, did you feedback all your views to the teachers? I am sure they will have some advice?
Yes and i did but nothing came out of it! Also you must be very careful when highlighting issues as some teachers are quite petty and have a bad habit of marking your child after that! A case in point, you may recall that there was a case of cyberbullying that came out on tv and newspapers abouot 3 years ago. The victim was so terrified and the victim's parents made a complaint to the school and no action was taken. After it came out in the news, the school just reprimanded the bullies and that was it. In the end the victim transferred out and the bullied remain in CHIJ TP Sec school!

momof4:
I have 2 daughters in this school now, sec 1 and sec 4, both from the primary section too. I must admit what is said about the quality of principal and teachers are true. But then again, the quality of teachers, and their lack of commitment, is quite the norm in most schools. I have 2 teachers and 1 principal in the family, I know.

Academic wise, the school practices 'teach less, learn more'. Their reason, so that they produce independent, proactive learners, who will be able to do well in their lives. I personally do not agree with this method, because my dds are not high achievers, and they need the teachers guidance. My dd1 was extremely stressed when she was in lower sec trying to figure out what the teachers wanted. My dd2 is now undergoing the same stress. But by sec 3, they should be able to adapt to this method of teaching.

I believe the school stresses on character building, in their subtle way. This is more obvious in the primary school. Most, if not all, of my dds' friends are quite well behaved. They seldom go out, and when they do, they most probably will end up in the library. They have their hair all neatly tied up, with fringe clipped up. They wear their belts properly and talk sensibly. Because they all already knew most of the students in the cohort in primary school, they are very comfortable whichever class they are assigned to, and they can be quite loyal too!

As for the vandalism case this year, the police were called in to investigate. No one, not even the teachers, know who did it. The principal kept very quiet about it. Our guess is, the case has gone to higher level, no point announcing who the culprit is. Rumour has it that a student let in some outsiders in the night to vandalize the place.

I asked my dd1 this morning whether expletives and 4 letter words are common In the school. She replied that it's not common, but the 'normal' stream students do use them sometimes. I am a sahm, and I ferry my kids to school. Sometimes I also see students with hair let down, or screaming and shouting, or those without belt or wear at hip level. But there are always such students in any school. As long as you as a parent is communicating well with your dds, and their values are strong, they should be alright. Sometimes I feel that it's good for them to be exposed to other characteristics, so that they can learn right from wrong. The girls in pure science classes are veery good. And some of the combined science girls are well behaved and hardworking too. Of course there are some black sheep in every school. I was told some students from a combined science
class managed to oust a teacher from the school. It was made into such a big issue that the teacher left. Quite sad.

This school took in most of their primary school students, even those with low psle scores, and can still manage to be in band 3, this is very good. That means the school is adding value to the students academically. Even though I have my fair share of grouses, I still put dd2 in, because I find their character building good. I've seen friends whose children were very clever with high scores, but change when they go to sec school. A relative started caning his dd who went to Cedar Girls cos she changed totally. And we're talking about a girls school.

And finally, we were told by the primary school's ex principal that the affiliation to the sec school is a privilege, not a given, and it will be removed in the near future.
Good to hear from you! I agree about the quality as there are one or two real gems - teachers there. But many good ones have left already. Sadly, the not so good ones are still around! 😢 I encouraged my DD to continue with a mission school because of the character building and religious aspects as i firmly believe that they are very important. However, i believe that the Secondary school falls short in this area and should seek to improve instead of burying its head in the sand.

Hi momof4,

Thanks for giving us more insight about the secondary school.
I sure hope the removal of the affiliation to the secondary school will not be removed...bcos the affiliation is the other reason we chose CHIJ for my daughter.
If this affiliation is removed, won't that mean all the other CHIJ primary schools will also lose their affiliation as well ?
I doubt that it will happen. Where will they go then? I think that they may just adjust the COP for affiliated schools upwards that's all.

Just read in another thread about the sex video case about two girls from ACJC that they are rumours that they are from CHIJ TP Sec.....

I have also seen the IJ TP sec girls at the bus stop after school and had a bad impression then, but we still registered my girl for pri 1 next girl as I thought it will fit us well in terms of religion as well as her interest, art....will really have to guide her closely as she grows....
Really? I have heard of such relationships in the secondary school.

Primary school is alright. Just keep open lines of communication with your DD. šŸ˜‰

I've heard of gay relationships in the school when I was in Sec 3. It's shocking to hear that.

We registered daughter in CHIJ TP bcos of the emphasis on holistic education...certainly hope we didn't make the wrong choice of registering her there..my son is in a co-ed school. I had a hard time making this decision...of giving up Phase 1. 😢
Hi Janet_lee88 Don't worry, primary school is alright. Try to do well and move on to CHIJ St Nicks Secondary and do IP. šŸ˜„

momof4:
Sigh, this is sad. This school seems to attract all the wrong kind of attention. But it does bring to mind what dd1 has been telling me the past year. The P told them all negative news about chij girls will all point to TP. My dd1's classmate who was transferred from another IJ school confirmed that in that school, it is common that if anyone asks which school they are from (obviously due to not so ideal behavior), always say CHIJ TP.

For those girls who come from the TP primary school, discipline is very strict. And they are normally well behaved. But in the sec school, they have girls from other IJ primary schools who enter thru dsa (sports), and they bring with them a different culture. Some of them went into dd1's class in sec 1, and she was so disgusted with them, loud, not very respectful ie talk back at teachers, etc. But in sec 3 when they got to know each other better, she find these girls quite sincere albeit behaving differently. So they became friends. Those girls are still questioning teachers and all, but that's the way they are. Dd1 understands that that's the culture in their primary school, and she also knows that's not to be emulated. Values are instilled during the primary school years, both by the school and parents.
Yes primary school is very strict in terms of punctuality, discipline, uniform etc. They use to check the belts to ensure that they were not too loose and hanging low! šŸ˜‰ But the secondary school is a nightmare! They come and go as they please and sometimes when a student is absent for a week, the form teacher is not even aware! 😢

With such right mental attitude exhibits by parents here, all your dds shall perform relatively well when they are in St. Nicks. Positive school, parents and kids, sure succeed!

Augmum:
Though some said that there are bound to have black sheep in every school,

but for this IJ TP sec school, i have seen quite a lot of these pupils in their \"unique uniform\"

Yes you are right! Sometimes i wonder if they are using the primary school uniforms coz they are so short!

i often go to toa payoh central, and every time i would not fail to spot these girls in grps
and they are def not the same grp of girls.....

pinafore with belts wearing at hips, funky hairstyle, some even being highlighted
talking and shouting at the top of their voices as if there were nobody ard

I am so amazed that the teachers do not notice and reprimand these students that are flouting the school rules with highlights, tattoos, even nose rings and tongue rings etc! The public can spot them a mile away! There must be some discipline instilled. If not, why bother to have any rules at all!

i am sure the discipline mistress can do a much better job !!!!Ha ha - I heard that she finally gave up the role as the students never changed!
