All About Getting Help for Students Weak in English

parent_in_west:
Hi parent_in_westFinding the right tutor is very important. Changed my ds's tutor a few times when he was in P4. One was even a school teacher from a reputable school in the west. Luckily, I was able to get another teacher from the same school in Term 4 that year. Had to travel to the tutor's house as tutor conducts 1-to-1 lessons at home. but it was worth the effort. In just three months, my ds managed to show improvement in composition writing and grammar. I was happy as his foundation in English was rather weak. He was able to go to the top class in P5 after being in an average class in P3 and P4.
My DS has just sat for the PSLE. He found the Oral and Composition components particularly easy this year as his tutor had provided customised notes on many Oral topics and one of the topics was tested on the day of his examination. Also made him do many compositions that cover a wide range of topics. Many vivid descriptions and writing techniques were used. MY DS was also made to do newspaper cuttings. My DS's English improved from about 60 to 75. It took time but it was worth the effort to pay for a committed and experienced tutor.
Thanks for your sharing. Normally you got your tutor through recommendation from friends or through agency? -

Hi Hifive,Hi jasmineong
I have not tried any of the 4 centres you mentioned. However, my nephew is with Mind Stretcher for lower primary English and Maths and so far my sister is happy with them. Not too sure about their upper primary tuition.
As for Kent Ridge, so far read from the forum that there is a Miss Janet in Tiong Bahru branch who is good.
Yes, I am still looking for either a good personal tutor or tuition centre for my DS who will be P6 next yr.
Yes, I agree with you, distance from home to the tuition centre is also a factor I will consider. In my opinion, I do not wish to stress my DS to travel too far after a long day from school on weekedays or if he can better utilise his weekend time to catch up on schoolwork. If you do come across any good recommendation, pls pm me. Thanks in advance.
True, distance is very important. But sometimes if cannot find one near to my house also difficult..if I go for a centre nearby and it is not so good..I rather go for one further so I am also quite torn, distance versus quality..
But i guess my kids not in P6, so time factor not that important for me..anyway, this weekend, I will be going around many of the centres to have a look, will update you if I find any that is good.. -
Hi jasmineong
Thanks in advance. I also hope that you will find a suitable tuition centre for your children soon. -
Hi, HiFive. I prefer recommendation via word of mouth after my previous encounters with uncommitted or irresponsible tutors. The tutor whom my DS had for the past two years was via word of mouth. One of my friends recommended the tutor to me. Her daughter topped her school and had rave review of her tutor so I decided to try. No regrets

Not sure about Science but heard their Maths program is not bad.
Hi TrapwithinTrapwithin:
I have a relative dd whose is in Mind Matters in Woodlands Civic Centre.
Apparently the program is helping her, your friend might want to find out more.
BC is not so academic driven, so might not be suitable.
I am also considering to place my DS in Mind Matters.
Pls advise (sorry to trouble you, if you can find out from your relative) if this Centre is also strong in their Maths and Science - Upper Primary?
Thanks in advance. -
