All About Flashcards
-
For me, I'm a kiasu mom and use a variety of methods for my 9 month old son. Flashcards, Your baby can read, Little Pim, Brillkids Little reader and Little Maths and saturday lesson at Little neuro tree.
Used to be pretty obsessive on flashing cards daily which was tough esp as it's late when home after work, and it's both exhaustive for me and my baby. Had since learned to take it easy as i feel my stress is \"transmitted\" to my son and made him tuned off when i start to bring the cards out.
Current schedule is to leave YBCR at my ILs place to show to him while eating on weekdays. Little PIM (he simply adores the panda!) at home on weekends. Brillkids occasionally on weekdays when back home if bb and I are not exhausted by then, and flashcards on and off when he's still fresh and eager to learn. And instead of solely flashing flashcards, can also incorporate games with it. Eg flash 2 cards eg 1 picture of an orange then 1 of a apple. Shuffle it, and show to him and ask him to guess which is the orange, or which is red, or which is round etc. Had also bought those posters that stick on the wall, with topics like shapes, fruits, musical instruments et. Will point out the objects to him when i happen to be carrying him and walking pass the wall. And when grocery shopping, i'll point out the objects to him and let him hold eg an apple, or bring him to the chiller area and let him experience the coldness blasting out or how the milk carton feels cold.
This arrangement seems to be working best for both of us. He's enjoying all his \"programs\" as there is more variety and it's also less exhaustive and stressful for me trying to keep up with flashing and replacing cards and topics on a daily basis.
Even though I'm an advocate for flaschards as it's a simple and effective way to impart quick knowledge to our childfren, however, no matter how good flashcards are, it's only one dimensional. It'll be good to also incorporate our child's learning on a more multi-dimensional level . Eg instead of solely flashing different types of flora and fauna flashcards, bring the child to nearby garden or botanic gardens, let them physically see how a plant looks like, touch how soft a flower petal is or feel how crinkly texture a leaf makes. It'll reinforce learning as well as stimulate the touch, see and feel senses.
Btw, one tip. A cheaper alternative I find to laminating the cards is to buy transparent folders and slot the cards in. When ready to move on another group of topics, just recycle the transparent folders. -
Hi all,
DS will crush the cards if they are too soft. Can anyone recommend me what is the brand to buy those more sturdy ones?
I tried to look for it from popular just nw, but most of them are not sturdy enuff…
Those with words below the picture isit good? or those 1 side picture and 1 side words more suitable for a 13 mth? -

Actually they are not supposed to play with the flashcards. You show it to them, then keep them.Hi all,

If you are going to strictly follow GD or Shichida, then flash and keep.
I don't believe in flashing only cos my boy learns faster when he gets to touch and experience things. So we let him play with the cards. He is learning faster than when we were flashing only.
Also, you can use the cards to play games. We use the cards to teach him to form proper sentences. -
hey MyMooMoo, mrswongtuition is right. Don’ty worry about flashing if the kid is really not into sitting there and just watching you flash the cards.
DS used to sit there when he was a baby but now adays, he wants to play the teacher and flash it to me instead. So we just lay the cards on the floor and talk about them.
I am not too sure of the pricing now abut bought the dots cards many years ago for I think 30-40 bucks per box. Shichida cards can be bought from the shichida store in their school. -
Hi all,
Ya... i intend to get some more tough flashcards to try them out.. so that DS and get to feel and play with them... Then the GD one i paste onto the wall for him to look at them when im at work.. hehehe... Dont know if it is too much for him.. But currently, im only flashing 1 set of english (5 words) and 1 set of math dots (5 cards)
But do you think i should still flash even DS crawls or walk away? Do you encounter occasions when you flash and your kids suddenly daydream the moment you start flashing the cards?
I will fly to shuchida asap.. hehe...
I wonder if their chinese and english cards are 1 side pic and the other words... :? -
