SPCA charges $10 a hamster, not sure if the price has gone up now and they do not give you free cages. But from my experience, better not get from the SPCA.

I got my first hamster from there, but the hamster died within a month, so made me wonder if they knew the exact age of the hamster that they put up for adoption. They told me that it was a young hamster.
Second hamster also ended up the same way, so no more hamsters from SPCA for me from then on.
Nothing against the SPCA, just my own experience where hamsters are concerned, but I got my dog from there and it's been 6 years, and she's still around. -
Oh dear, 25hourmaid!
But at least the dog has been around for a long time!

Sometimes they have hamsters. -
Thanks a lot to those who have shared and replied.
It really depends on luck; a newly bought thing also can spoilt. We have bought fish and died the next day.
Basically, we are hoping to see anybody giving up their hamster and we take over from there.
Dd will be paying and thus trying to look for the lowest cost available.
Thanking you in advance. -

Precisely! My younger son was heartbroken (he was quite young then) and cried buckets when the first hamster died and that was a very special hamster whom we fondly called Hamie. She's still our beloved hamster after all these years.Oh dear, 25hourmaid!

And yes, luckily we got a young and healthy dog as compared to the two hamsters we got from there. -

I cried buckets when my first hamster died 3 years ago.
She was only 7 months old.
So i decided to have lots of hamsters to comfort myself.
Having pets is therapeutic.
Btw, my guinea pig has just given birth to 2 pups which are sooooo adorable.
The mommy and daddy did not have kids for 1 year before i adopted them. Just when i was about to adopt them, the female must have become pregnant cos i neutered the male almost immediately after i adopted them. -

Aiyo, guinea pigs! Love them, love their nice coats. They are so adorable, but have never tried to keep them. The babies must be very cute. How big were when they were born? -
HappyAvon,
Just to update, our guess on which is the male one is probably right.
Cos it’s rather aggressive, even towards my hubs who wanted to bring it out of the cage to play. & it tried to bite the kiddos who wanted to play with it too.
And during cage cleaning last week, we had no choice but to put them together for a while, this naughty one went chasing and biting the other two! End up we took him out and let it roam around the living room while cleaning its cage.
Their appetite is FEROCIOUS!
I’ve not managed to get dried mealworm or fresh live ones yet.
Will try to get them this week when I’m not so busy.
Giving them bits of fresh fruits and vege daily plus the normal dried hamster food with sunflower seeds.
The hamsters are greatly loved (by all my students).
Endless fun for all (students have been requesting that their parents send them over early or pick them up late so they can play with the hammies).
And I realised, spending a little bit more to buy better bedding helps eliminate the smell totally! -

Try those recycled cat litter. I find that they are economical and really good in absorbing the smells.
