For CL, buy the MOE approved type.

What’s the purpose of you getting a dictionary for your P1 child?

            If your purpose is:
            1. Easy to check meaning/pronunciation of new words (for both English and Chinese)
            2. Can translate from English to Chinese and vice versa
            3. Can store a word list (and can program to ‘test’ based on the list created)
            4. Can DL other languages FOC; also has Science dictionary (for scientific terminology)

So far most of my students are using this model:
            Besta 660S - around $500+ (after discount)

Can do all the above and even more. Very helpful in terms of self-study at home. Can use till Sec school and beyond (if it is kept in good condition).

Only downside: Cannot be used for exams.
So they bought the cheaper version from school ($30+) for exams.

don't think you need to purchase dictionary at P1 yet.
For chinese, the sch will recommend you to buy at P3. The Creative e-dict is very popular. But you shouldn't buy now cos the model may change / improve 1 or 2 years down the road. Approved dictionaries can be used during exams for Paper 1 (compo) from P3 onwards.
For english, no dictionary during exams. So you can buy any dictionary which is suitable for your kid for own private reference. i still prefer the old fashion english dictionaries like my old oxford dict. longman also good.
