Poor CCA attendence

Hi my daughter (sec 2) is in Drama CCA. However, as her attendance has been very poor, it is now <50%. Therefore, her cca points for the past two years has been annulled. Is there any way for her to be in the A1/A2 range at sec 4 so that her cut off points will be 2? She involves herself in alot of external activities such as fundraising, cancer foundation etc… It’s just her cca that worries me. She promised that she will attend 100% from now on but I don’t know if it will be of use… Help?

Why did she miss the cca? Does she like the Drama CCA or ??? Maybe you should find out from her.

Just attending CCA will not help much towards getting the A1/A2 grade, she needs to take on some leadership positions within the CCA or represent the CCA at national levels. She needs to start working on it. She will have less time in Sec3/4 to do it as she will have more subjects on her plate. Hope it helps

Hey, may i ask, is your child in an IP school or a non-IP school?

If she's in an IP school, then you can relax a little, as long as her grades still allow her to go to her designated JC, she's fine being the way she is, though it will DEFINITELY reflect bad on her if she wants to get into leadership stuff, if she cant even juggle her basic commitment(CCA), how can she promise to commit to leadership positions?

If she's not in an IP school. Then you better make sure she goes to her CCA asap. Talk to her about the problems, why she didnt attend cca regularly. School work? Dont like her cca? TALK TO HER. and make sure you know the root problem. and try to get on from there.

CCA reflects alot about a person. The amount of commitment you put in, can tell a person's personality and character. And teachers(class and cca teachers) do give comments about this kind of things.

For drama CCA, i believe points are given according to the number of performances? Also, to get a position in the cca, eg head of the cca. and these requires your commitment, and the basic thing you can do to show that you're willing to contribute to the cca is to at least give your 100% attendence.

For now, try to get your CIP hours up, it gives you a few points, but most is 4 points for 100hours if i never remember wrongly.

Go for competitions, such as math olypiad etc. different competitions give you different number of points, and the higher level you go(eg,finals) you get more points too.

And depending on your school, different schools have their own system of giving their students cca points.
eg, my school gives a student 1 point, for every 3 school competitions/events that she goes for to support the school team.

Well, there isnt really much for the parent to help, because it is still up to the child's own performance. Let her know the consequences, though i believe she probably already knew them. Amidst all the external activities that she has, try not to neglect her cca.

I think ultimately, it's the effort-reward thing. Maybe she doesnt feel that she is being 'rewarded' for the amount of efforts she put in before, that's why she dont feel the need to go for cca anymore. but bear in mind, the rewards NEVER come in sec1,2 or even sec3. The best rewards always come only in sec4, even if it's only for half a year.

Help your child find the most enjoyable part of her cca, remind her of why she even join the cca in the first place.(unless it was not her choice). It is important to enjoy what you're doing, so that you'll feel a need to do what you're doing, instead of it being a chore. Really, if cca is a chore, it spoils the meaning and fun of learning and having a cca.

If all comes to no avail, talk to her teachers? See if they can help in ways that you cant. if not, change a cca?

sec4 year is going to be pretty crazy, so do as much as she can in sec3.

My DD is in sec 1 this year. Everything is new to her and myself. I try to analyse the above but still do not really understand. Please help....
My DD wants to join AV & IT club. Does it mean points will be lesser compare to sports? How do they calculate the points?
Their school says that it is vital and compulsory for them to join CCA. What is the importance?

Even for sports CCA, unless representing the school, the points not that many. They critical thing is whether or not the student is representing the school. This is the same for debate, drama, etc. Once the child participates in events such as the Singapore Youth Festival, the number of points chalked up for CCA increases and there is usually no problems with getting the 2 point reduction for JC application.
