I think picture compo is an ice cream dropped on the head of an executive. And for situation is you at a bus stop waiting with a friend when an elderly lady walked unsteadily towards you.
Then for situation writing is email. Either about birthday party or present. Write to a friend. -
Hi all, am new to this and terribly glad there’s a platform to share our worries on. My son will be in CHS next yr. I was quite surprised (more like fearful actually!) to see that all the chinese textbooks in the booklist are for Higher Chinese. Our dominant language at home is English, and am really worried my son (and I) will not be able to cope.
Anyone know what the standards are like and if there is hope for CL2 types like us to survive? What about the Chinese teachers in CHS? Are they the encouraging nurturing sort? I still have images of whip-wielding Chinese teachers from my own day back in school. cry -

and u r in the right place...we've many Black belt experts here that can assist you.
From this year, higher chinese will be taught in school.
The school wants to give a head start for the boys and let them master the chinese earlier.
Don't feel fearful abt higher chinese...I;ve compared the textbooks for both normal chinese & higher chinese before...only minor differences.
In fact only extra pages will be added at the last part of the text book.
Just additional chinese words included for the higher chinese.
The chinese teachers are great and patience...so don't worry.
I have also heard that the teachers gave extra coaching to those very weak boys.
My advice is to start coaching yr DS in hanyu pinyin first.
You can get those mini swatch book from poupular bookshop.
My boy finds that very useful and we can practise everywhere.

Welcome! I agree with dreammom that your ds should start with Hanyu Pinyin first.
My ds is in P1 now. Last year Nov/Dec holidays, the school had a Hanyu Pinyin intensive class for new students. It was conducted by an external vendor. Parents welcomed to sit in the class so that you can guide your child at home with what has been taught in class. Pretty good and ds picked up Hanyu Pinyin pretty fast from there. That was a good opportunity for ds to get to know the school environment before academic year began in Jan.
They also recommended a cartoon DVD that teaches Hanyu Pinyin ... ds likes to watch that and it helps!
Don't worry, your boy will be in good hands!

By the way, my elder boy survived CHS and only did the compulsory HCL until p4, and did standard CL for p5/p6 and of course PSLE. He's now doing HCL in his secondary school (not CHS) bc it is compulsory for all students in his school programme to do HCL. He's doing ok too. Could be better, but well, not at his worst at least. -
Yes, I think for all SAP Pri sch, they never had to go outside to do HCL.
Doing HCL from Pri and getting the higher standard training builds a strong foundation for the future. Even if they switch to standard CL at p5/p6, it's not much of a problem to meet the demands at all since it's less demanding as compared to HCL. Right? -

can anyone advise, is it very stressful in CH from p1 onwards?
hoping that my boy can get it but also worried cos he is not very bright, average, but very lazy and playful and short attentn span. always need rewards or punishment to push him to do wksheets. -
Don’t worry too much now, start your plan to get into the school first.
When your boy getting to P1?
