Mine long already prepared a to-do list; not on topics for revision but items to do after the exam! :x

Could it be that it's bcoz she is super confident that she'll breeze thru it? 😎

            Lock:

My son is very 'kantang' one. He actually prefers to go ACS (which I think he will fit super well, but I think the distance is just tooo far and I didn't like him to be mixing with the 'atas' kids and start comparing family wealth. )
            Hi Lock,

I hope you don't mind me asking... as my gal also very 'kantang', please share your DS's journey with CL this year.. :please:

Please share on how he manage, the preparation required and his overall feeling now etc etc..

            :thankyou: in advance

Glad to share. I will go back in time to share more in depth.... πŸ˜‰
When my son was in K1, he professed to be an English and not Chinese. He didn't speak a single word and disliked even the sound of it. I remember he wld get real frustrated when we tried to converse with him in Mandarin. Then, I signed him up with EduPlus. He became very good in word recognition but still wld not speak the language. My hubby thinks that in a group setting, he can choose not to speak and get away with it, so, we stopped Eduplus and got a Beijing CL teacher to do 1-1 with him when he was K2.

The lessons were non academic. The teacher wld read storybooks to him and asked him a few questions based on the story, there're lots of interactions going on (like that he was forced to speak and cos the teacher can't speak EL at all, he had no choice). πŸ˜‰ Plus he enjoyed the stories and talking (he's VERY talkative), so he's slowly speaking the lang w/o him realising.

Also, I kept telling him that Rulang is a very Chinese school with many students who can only speak CL and if he can't speak CL at all, he wld not be able to make many friends. (Yup, he's the very sociable type). That helped a little cos he was less resistant in trying to speak the lang wif us.

Finally, when he entered Rulang, true enough most of his classmates speak mainly CL. Cos of his nature, he had no choice but to speak CL also in order to make more friends. But he's not so miserable cos exposure at home beforehand. His CL tutor also started to do more academics stuff with him this year but will still read storybks occassionally and because of that he had no problem catching up in class. Hence, confidence level for the lang also goes up.

I also made him sign up for Chinese Orchestra as enrichment (the trainer speaks to them in CL), the sch also has CL calligraphy as extra lessons. I think the Chinese environment in Rulang helps him to assimiliate quite well into the Chinese learning.

So, initially though he was upset that he can't go ACS, he is very happy in Rulang now. And I am happy too cos now he peppers his sentences with CL occassionally when conversing and is not resistant against the lang anymore.

:thankyou: for taking time for the detailed sharing Lock!

Firstly, kudos to you as your foresight on the Cl 1-1 lessons paid-off! :boogie:

your sharing makes me feel much more at ease... I'm in a similar situation as you.. my DD1 when in K1 told me she is English not Chinese gal! :faint: That really made us panicked and we sent her to Berries since.. πŸ˜“

She is less resistant now but we don't speak the language with her... she is also very talkative and I suppose she will also be forced to speak the language if she wants more friends

Wow, Chinese Orchestra and Calligraphy.. cheem.. my gal said she want Wushu

BTW, how much do you pay for the lessons? Once a week on a weekday morning / Saturday?

So great to hear that you and your DS is happy there..

                :celebrate: :celebrate:

The CL tutor comes once a week. The fees is $40/hr. I know she is expensive but she is really good and I can see result. πŸ˜„

Actually he joins Robotics and Chinese Orchestra as enrichments because he wld only join Chinese Orchestra if I let him join robotics.πŸ˜‰ But frankly 2 enrichments are really quite taxing on him as he had to make sure he finished his homework on the nights before the enrichments. So next yr I will only let him join 1.

Calligraphy is part of the curriculum but have to go to sch slightly earlier. It's on every Wed from 12.30pm-2pm

Speak chinese with your gal at home. And I mean 100% chinese.
This is the only and fastest way to cultivate/train her.
How often you heard of someone learning a foreign language like Japanese, German and complain that they have no one else to practise daily except when going back to the class?

As for Englis, they will learn it automatically in School.
I asked my ds what language he used to converse with his classmates during non-lesson time in Rulang, his answer - English...
