Dun worry, I believe you will and so will be your child. My gal is enjoying every moment of her days in PCS and finally this year, I did not need to hear her endless complaints of the rowdy school children (ex-school) in her school bus.


Honestly, I am pleased with how the school is run and the general behaviour of the children is simply good. :love:

In fact, since her successful school transfer to PCS, I have received further calls from 2 other top schools to accept her, but I choose to let her stay put. :celebrate:

My boy enjoys studying in Poi Ching very much. I believe your kid will as well. Not to worry. For weaker students, I understand they also conduct special remedial classes(think during term 3 & 4) to help them.

The main concern most parents have is Poi Ching Higher Chinese. Unsure if you had heard, they use their own higher chinese textbook(the normal school MOE recommended P1 Higher Chinese textbook was used to teach hanyupinyin during first term only). P1 & P2 students are required to recognise/know around 2000 words by end of Pri 2.
P1 students will be tested every or every other week on words recognition(think 60+ - 100 words each time). For his class, probably 4-5 students get full marks during term 1/2. However in their latest test, 12 out of 30 manage to score full marks. So it shows our kids are capable of doing well even though the chinese standard is pitched higher. I find their chinese syllabus very good and his chinese teacher very motivating. She will give star stickers when students perform well in test or behave well(character building is important too). The stickers can be used to exchange small rewards like sparkling pen/highlighter/globe/eraser...etc. This reward system works well for my boy as he wants to prove to his teacher that he can do well too.

Actually, I feel very excited that DS is going to P1, like a new milestone for him. I hope he can cope well too because he is so far a very self-motivated boy. If he don’t get full marks for spelling and ting xie, he will feel bad and at times cry because he feel that it was a silly mistake on his part. We have never reprimand him for not getting full marks, but we will explain that since the words are given and he has ample time to learn, he should not be making the mistakes if he had put in effort to practice hard.

babynicole/alphonsus - Which level are your kids in? I am aware of the unique Chinese methods PC teaches and the values they adopt, this is why I chose to enrol him in PC. Am relieved to hear so good comments from you all.

Guess what, I had a dream last night that DS did badly for his orientation assessment! LOL! Think the mother is more stressed than the child.

Mine is a transfer case. Currently in P2. Culture shock initially but as what Alphonsus has rightly pointed out, the teachers are encouraging and motivated the child to strive with little rewards, sometimes, may simply be just stickers or handmade cards :love:

Mine is going to PC P1 next year too. Has sent my child to a Chinese enrichment class for about a year till now. Hope the preparation suffices. But don't you think the \"streaming\" a bit too early? Unnecessary stress, to me.

I am also waiting for the book list. I heard some other schools already had their orientation and everything done. Has been wondering... good to see the update here.

I too am unsure how and what criteria they use to screen students and assign their P1 class. Don't have to be stressed! The assessment is not accurate representation of kid's ability as kid may be shy and may not do well during the \"oral/reading tests\". Anyway I undersand students will be streamed in P3 & P5 again(this time should be based on their results). Guess by P5, all the better students will be in either C or D class, according to current system. Just keep ensuring our kid put in their best effort, guide them and motivate them to do better next time.

PC usually hold P1 orientation on last day of school, think 19th Nov this year. If you have any questions/concerns, you can always ask the principle, he is quite approachable. Parents will also be shown around the school during orientation. Take this time to explore school canteen(find out the type of food and pricing(so you know how much pocket money to give), library, classroom location, toilet, CCA...etc

Btw, will the chinese assessment reading have han yu pin yin? Or just chinese words?
