Would You Let Your Kids Skip School
-
LKVM:
Thanks, gotcha!Yes different parents think differently and maybe if we allow too many times missing the class the kids may feel its ok to miss.. so thats why need to tell them its only sometimes on special occassions only... but for me its okkk to do as long as its justified... it shouldnt be cannot do
IMHO

Totally agree toojedamum:
afterall, if my kids eventually go overseas to work, i do like them to take leave from their busy workschedule and take the time to fly back and celebrate such occasions with me
Exactly....

Thank you, duriz.
Impressive :celebrate:
It's nothing to shout about in terms of technical skills (or the lack of... ), but I like that they encourage creativity. We need more of that! :celebrate: -

u can come back on sunday so that they can attend the school following monday...
Oh... forget to mention, my family is here, so to be fair to both sides, we usually come back early to be able to visit my side on the second day (since CNY is just 2 days of public holidays). Also, given our work, we usually have a bit of networking to do on either the 2nd or the 3rd day of CNY. -

I think it will come a time when DD wouldn't want to miss school and the celebration in school.Usually for primary school, they are not too strict about it. As long as parents write a letter to the school will do. Secondary school is tougher.
Sending wrong message:
I think most parents are afraid that their kids might start to think that it's alright to miss school as long as you have something 'important'.
At their age, many things can be 'important'. And as a result, they might start to raise arguements about not going to school on those 'important' days.
Family first or studies first?
To me, family is more important. If we have to travel to meet up with grandparents, then we have to do it, even if it's for a short trip.
Usually for CNY celebrations, there's no lesson and school usually ends earlier for teachers to go home to prepare too.
Discuss with the kids about it too (some kids may not want to skip school).
Alternatively, fly the grandparents in (maybe alternate years?) unless they are too old to travel.
I think missing the celebrations and maybe 1-2 days of school is still alright, but not too long (alot of catch up work to do).
Actually, it's rather common in schools with alot of foreign students (esp Malaysians and PRCs).
Problem is grandparents want to stay at home when it is CNY, although to be honest, I have seen very little celebration over there all these years (and they are perfectly fit to travel). CNY to me, is to catch up with relatives, uncles, aunties, and cousins especially. But in our case, there are none (don't ask me why) and even the cousins will not be there too.
In fact, I fear for my kids to think that CNY is a boring affair, spending time in a sleepy town...
On my side, I always miss my reunion dinner with my family, except for certain times when I couldn't travel due to specific reasons. -

Taking into TS' topic into view, that the CNY visitations are related to visiting the grandparents, i personally feel that it will be the wrong message to send to our kids that to attend sch for the sake of attending (but if is EOY exams, that is valid reasons to attend sch) and not celebrating with the elders is acceptable. afterall, if my kids eventually go overseas to work, i do like them to take leave from their busy workschedule and take the time to fly back and celebrate such occasions with me
Next question, if your son marries a foreigner, what do you think should be the way the couple splits the time between his family and her family during CNY?
Should reunion dinner on the eve always be with the guy's family? -

Beautiful colours too!
Thank you, Blobbi.
I like that red hot colour of your avatar, suits the image I have of you better than the previous blue.

Just out of curiosity, would you let your primary school kids skip school to go to another country for Chinese New Year (grandparents there), and if so, skip for how many days?
I will let my DS skip primary school before and for a few days
as we need to travel to see his grandma and she is quite old .
What I did is collect all the worksheets and help to catch up when we
are back home, this way he have a continuity.
Its works out fine , Have done this for many years when DS is in Primary
school, now that he is in Sec sch , we let him fly home earlier before us
while we stay behind, he look after himself for this period and get himself to
school.

Busymom:
For next June, leave on Friday.
Ah, so do you mean taking him out on Tuesday or on Wednesday?
