How to tell if a child is gifted?

Blobbi:
yup..I totally agree..having right attitude towards life!
I tell you how I felt when we first did the test.vlim:
hi 2ppaamm,
Did u send your kids to any IQ test (WISC IV)? If yes which clinic did u go to?
At first, it was wow! Nice! What a buzz. Then there were all these books to read about how to deal with kids like that at home. I felt like I struck gold because finally, there was this group of people who understood what I had to go through everyday just talking him round to having a meal or going to school for that one day. I could get help!!
2 years later, I'm like huh, what's that? So what? Git back here - you're not touching that computer/book/comic till you've finished your meal.
Moral of the story - the label is useful especially when you run into problems, and we've had so many! LIke any other label, it gives you a common understanding and a place to start searching for answers. But on a day to day basis, it's back to basics for discipline, same as for anyone. My son can do what others can't in some areas, and other kids can do miles more than he can in many others. Isn't that the same for everyone? It really doesn't matter. The son's mine. I've got to cater to his individual needs.
The scores don't matter if he hasn't picked up the right attitude towards life and learning anyway. I just have to make sure that he does.

IMO, a really professional clinic should be equipped to use both WISC and SB, cos' each measures slightly different things and tells a different part of the whole story. WISC is just popular in SG, so most of them might not want to invest in purchasing more than 1 test.
There's only one psychologist in Singapore who can do this S-B test when I asked 3 years ago, the rest only administer WISC IV.
Also, it is not critical for me to do another IQ test just to know his IQ. I just want to complete the test we did halfway and submit that. Your info will be really good for those who want to test their kids beyond 160. I don't know if it was SB LM, I thought the psychologist told me she was doing SB V.
SB V is the 5th edition (SB IV is the 4th edition, etc.,) and no, it is different from the Form L-M. Just curious, are you referring to the WISC for your uncompleted tests? -

The one clinic I know can only do sb v and not the older lm. All the clinics I called then said it was too old a test. I haven't bother to look the last 2 years.

Yes. Do you know someone who can complete those? -

Up til now, I still have to remind hubby not to snack before mealtimes & keep door open, esp if I'm walking right behind him, carrying his baby.
I also have a bit of ADD traits and \"AS memory\".
Now you know why I have to be a bit KS?

With love & faith, we'll get through life somehow. One day, we'll be able to laugh at the childhood years. Pls keep sharing

my girl is 1 jan 03 baby, and as moe says those born on eg 2 jan 02 - 1 jan 03 is one cohort, my girl ‘skipped’ one yr during presch and just turned 6 when she was p1 last yr.
she is not gifted but she copes well so far cos i started her early.
but for math, she is not that gd for prob sums cos maturity not there yet. so i dont fancy skipping -

I heard 1 Jan kid has the option to choose which year to join from dd's enrichment teacher. Her gal also same birthdate as yours. She defer her gal for one year to join the 2003 kids in P1. According to her, no medical reason required. Hence, instead of being youngest in class, her gal is the eldest. Not sure how's her gal's grades in school though, didn't stay closely in touchmy girl is 1 jan 03 baby, and as moe says those born on eg 2 jan 02 - 1 jan 03 is one cohort, my girl 'skipped' one yr during presch and just turned 6 when she was p1 last yr.

My boy is in a kindy, not CC cos his previous CC was totally not academic and their curriculum was too simple to the point my boy was very disruptive in class due to boredom.
If you are keen to know which kindy, you can drop me a PM.

:goodpost:Point is, she must be happy. Happiness is the greatest gift to the child, not an IQ.
All my children have a few good friends and it is wise to make a few good friends. But I believe it is just a few. My oldest has only one fantastic friend. That fantastic friend has stuck throughout primary, secondary years. He never laughed, ridiculed or singled my son out. He is only there to support whatever my son does, and vice versa. I must say I was not the one with the foresight. It was the other boy's mum who saw that that friendship must be built from very young. Helping them get a few friends is another gift we can give. If you can find that for your child, then you've doubled your blessing on her.2ppaamm:
I read up a little some time ago. Gifted children generally scored extremely well in verbal comprehension. Mine is reverse. Her verbal comprehension is close to 50th percentile although she scored extremely well in perceptual, processing speed and working memory, hitting ceiling for some of the subtests. Because of the wide variation, she doesn't have any IQ score. For example, the ones who function the best in gifted classrooms are those who score high in Perceptual and Verbal (high correlation), and the Processing Speed and Working Memory play a lesser role (low correlation). Because of the ceiling of 19 for each subtest, most EG kids above 10 will hit the ceiling for some subtests (meant for up to 17 years old). Without the extended subtests (I couldn't find them in Singapore), we cannot know their real IQ.
There is hardly any write up or research on children with low verbal comprehension, hence really clueless what to make up of that. Not sure whether it has any impact on social skills?
Gifted or not, I only hope she can be well liked by classmates. To some, it seems so natural, always surrounded by friends. Not sure how to impart social skill to her. I'm not exactly popular when I was in school too  -
Sleepy, cut and paste this here for you, hope it is useful:
"Verbal Comprehension and Perceptual Reasoning tasks are heavily loaded on abstract reasoning ability and are better indicators of giftedness as compared to Working Memory and Processing Speed. In this case, there are extremes in both the scores, VCI being low and PRI being very high. The subsets for VCI represent key clinical indicators of the cognitive strengths and weakness considered important to the assessment of learning disabilities, executive functions, attentional disorders, traumatic brain injuries, mental retardation, lead poisoning, giftedness, and various other medical and neurological concerns. On the other hand, the PRI emphasizes on fluid reasoning abilities as measured by the Matrix Reasoning subtest and Picture Concepts subtest – which your daughter scores highly.
The Verbal Comprehension and Perceptual Reasoning Composites are both very good indicators of giftedness; they assess verbal abstract reasoning and provide useful tests of visual reasoning with less timing emphasis. In your case, due to the significant difference between the VCI and PRI, the WISC-IV Full Scale IQ scores for the gifted may be difficult to interpret.
The VCI describes verbal conceptualization, stored knowledge access and oral expression. The child is required to answer orally presented questions that assess common-sense reasoning, reasoning out or retrieving word associations and the ability to describe the nature or meaning of words. Verbal expression is required here. Low scores here may indicate a possible difficulty with language, weak fluid reasoning skills in verbal domain, or even possible hearing concerns.
As for the high PRI scores, they indicate high visual perception and organization, and reasoning with visually presented, nonverbal material to solve the types of problems which are usually not taught in schools. Block design also requires visual-motor coordination and the ability to apply all skills in a quick, efficient manner. High scores reflect both accurate and very quick responses.
It would be best for you to sought further help as a more detailed interpretation or other tests may be required to understand the difference in scores. It is possible that she has a language deficiency and perhaps you may want to consider a verbal test." -

Wah buddy, long time no see, and you 改头换面 until I cannot recognise you! All of us have to be forced to be compliant at one point or another, just to survive the system and not stick out.2ppaamm, I cannot agree with you more...
I find the primary school education stifling for my child but there is no choice, forced to be compliant just for the sake of marks la. My child will never be a straight perfect scorer cos she may not comply to the learning approach all the time.
I particularly like this sentence u made:
5. Only seeking to score 'A' by finding out and reproducing what professors want. They'll never find out in the uni, because there's no such thing
because this is exactly what they are training in the SCHOOLs just to make things simple for marking!
Sad... but reality. But with what's happening these few weeks, I have new insights to things. I guess, if we choose to look at the brighter side, it is not so bad. I'll share my insights one of these days with you guys!
