I did animal farm in Sec 2 and Shakespeare in Sec 3/4. I enjoyed them but never imagined that my DS would still be studying the same book many years later.
During my literature years in sec sch days, we needed to do poetry, plays and shorts stories. My worst subject

My son did To Kill a Mocking Bird this year for his sec 2 Literature. It is a really wonderful book but at his age, I don't think he is able to appreciate the underlying message . What a waste! :lol: -

That's the reason why I asked if The Animal Farm is suitable for 14 y.o. Wld the kids take it just as a fiction story or understand its implications/relate it to our present society makeup?
When my boy was in P6, the sch made HOLES a compulsory reading material. To him, it was a boring book. -

I enjoyed Animal Farm in Sec2, and still remember it till today. Our kids are smarter than we think they are. But in today's world, Communism is no longer a threat like it used to be. So the relevance of the book has been simmered down for that reason.
Another text I enjoyed was \"Things Fall Apart\". Some schools still use it today. That may be still relevant because it talks about changing cultures and values in society - a challenge that our children face. -
